Von Duprin 959603 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Von Duprin 959603 part do on an 880 Series exit device?
The 959603 is the thumbpiece axle, the small pivot component the thumbpiece turns on in a Von Duprin 880 Series exit device. When the thumbpiece feels loose, sloppy, or stops retracting the latch, the axle is the wear item you replace to bring the trim back to proper operation instead of pulling the whole device off the door.
2) Will the 959603 thumbpiece axle fit exit devices other than the Von Duprin 880 Series?
No. The 959603 axle is built for the Von Duprin 880 Series only, as a direct drop-in for that device's thumbpiece axle. It is not a universal pin, so if your device is a 98/99, 33A/35A, or another maker's rim or mortise device, this is the wrong part. Confirm the series stamped on your device before ordering.
3) Do I have to replace the whole 880 exit device if the thumbpiece has gone loose?
Usually not. If the trim itself is intact and only the pivot has worn, swapping in the 959603 axle restores the thumbpiece action and returns the device to proper operating condition without a full device replacement. Replace the device or the trim only when the thumbpiece, spindle, or chassis is damaged too.
4) Is this a genuine Von Duprin part or an aftermarket copy?
Genuine OEM. The 959603 is a factory Von Duprin replacement part made to Von Duprin specifications for the 880 Series assembly, so the axle indexes the same way the original did and no filing or fitting is needed.
5) Is the 959603 axle suitable for a high-traffic commercial opening, or is it a light-duty part?
Heavy duty and commercial rated. Von Duprin classifies the 959603 at the heavy duty level for commercial use, which is what you want on school corridors, hospital doors, retail exits, and office stairwells where the thumbpiece gets cycled all day.
6) I manage a building with several 880 devices. Should I stock the 959603 as a spare?
It's a sensible spare for a fleet of 880 openings. The axle is a moving wear point under the thumbpiece, it's a single fixed part number with no handing or finish choice to get wrong, and one number covers every 880 device in the building, so a few on the shelf keep a stuck exit trim from becoming a work order that waits on shipping.
