This LED 12V super bright and energy efficient strip light is IP68 rated for wet locations and continuous immersion up to 5 meters underwater making it the perfect choice for illuminating pools, ponds, wells, or just about any outdoor application. 1) Can the WAC 8011 strip light be submerged in a pool or pond?
Yes. The 8011 DC strip light is IP68 rated for wet locations and continuous immersion to 5 meters, so pools, ponds, fountains and well shafts are all in scope. The silicone casing is double insulated and UV stabilized, so it also holds up in open-air landscape runs. It carries UL and cUL 1838 listing.
2) What power supply do I need to run WAC 8011 12V strip light?
The 8011 runs on 12V, input range 9-15V AC, and needs a magnetic or electronic 12V supply, it does not plug into line voltage. WAC's stainless steel landscape transformers cover it: 9075-TRN-SS at 75W, 9150-TRN-SS at 150W, 9300-TRN-SS at 300W, and 9600-TRN at 600W. If there's already a 12V landscape lighting system on the property, the strip ties straight into it.
3) Can WAC 8011 LED strip light be cut to length on site?
It can be cut in the field, but only at the end of a run, and the offcut is dead once it's cut, there's no way to re-terminate the leftover piece and use it elsewhere. Order the section sizes to match the job. Sections come in 1ft, 5ft and 10ft, so plan the layout in those increments and leave the field cut for the last piece.
4) How wide is the WAC 8011 strip, will it fit inside a cove or under a stair nosing?
The 12 inch section measures 12 inches long, 0.75 inch high and 0.5 inch wide, so it drops into a half inch channel or slot. Each section carries a 4 inch lead. Mounting is not reversible, so orient the strip the way you want it aimed before you fix it down.
5) Will the WAC 8011 strip light dim on my existing landscape dimmer?
It dims on magnetic low voltage. WAC states smooth continuous dimming with an electronic low voltage (ELV) or TRIAC dimmer on the line side of the transformer. What matters is that the dimmer and the transformer are matched, you dim the 12V supply, not the strip itself. A standard incandescent wall dimmer on a 120V circuit feeding an electronic driver is where these installs go wrong.
6) How much light does WAC 8011 strip light actually put out, and what color?
115 lumens per foot at 2W per foot, with 85 CRI, so color rendering is good enough for planting beds, stone and architectural faces rather than just a glow line. The 12 inch section is rated 130 lumens. Two warm color temperatures are offered, 2700K and 3000K, both on a black casing: order 8011-27BK for 2700K, 8011-30BK for 3000K. Rated life is 60,000 hours.
7) How do sections of WAC 8011 strip light connect, and do I need to buy connectors?
Male-to-female end connectors ship with the strip, no separate connector kit to order. They tighten down to make a water tight joint, which is what lets the run stay IP68 rated once it is assembled. Get every joint snug, a loose connector is the failure point on a submerged run.
8) Does WAC 8011 strip light meet Title 24 and dark sky requirements for a California project?
Yes on both. The 8011 is Title 24 compliant and Dark Sky rated, which covers the two questions that usually come up on California residential and municipal landscape work. It is not Energy Star listed. It is also flagged ADA compliant.
9) Can WAC 8011 strip light be used indoors, like under cabinets or in a shower?
Yes, it is rated for indoor and outdoor use with a wet location listing, so a shower niche, steam room or wet bar is fine, as is a dry cove or toe kick. Same requirement either way: a 12V magnetic or electronic supply feeding it. At 0.5 inch wide and 0.75 inch high it tucks into most cabinet channels.
10) Can the LEDs in a WAC 8011 strip light be replaced when they burn out?
No. The LEDs are integrated into the sealed silicone body, there is no lamp to pull and no base to swap. Rated life is 60,000 hours, and when a section fails you replace the section. That is the tradeoff for the IP68 sealed construction, so on a submerged or buried run leave yourself a way to pull a section without demolition.
