1) Can the WAC 9000-MLV-BK dimmer be mounted outdoors in a landscape lighting run?
It's built for outdoor landscape use, but it does not mount on its own. The 9000-MLV-BK has to go inside a single-gang deep weatherproof junction box, which is not supplied, and the gasket that comes with it must be used to keep water out of that box. The housing itself is corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, which is why it holds up in a landscape run.
2) Will this WAC low voltage dimmer work on a 120V line-voltage circuit?
No. The 9000-MLV-BK is a 12VAC, 50/60Hz device and belongs on the secondary side of a transformer, not on a 120V branch circuit. Wiring it line voltage is the wrong application. For a 120V circuit you need a standard line-voltage wall dimmer instead.
3) Do I still need a transformer if I use the WAC 9000-MLV external dimmer?
Yes, a transformer is required. This is an external magnetic low voltage dimmer that runs on a 12VAC feed, so a 12V landscape transformer has to supply it. The dimmer does not convert voltage, it only controls the 12VAC output going to the fixtures.
4) What else do I need to buy to install the WAC 9000-MLV-BK?
Two things beyond the dimmer: a single-gang deep weatherproof junction box, which is not included, and a 12V transformer to feed it. The sealing gasket ships with the dimmer, so you don't source that separately.
5) Is the 9000-MLV dimmer right for MLV or ELV landscape loads?
It's an MLV (magnetic low voltage) dimmer, matched to 12VAC magnetic transformer systems. Electronic low voltage and 12V DC LED drivers are a different control type and are not what this device is designated for.
6) Why does my dimming range change when I add or remove fixtures on this WAC dimmer?
That's expected behavior. WAC states the dimming range may vary depending on the load applied, so a lightly loaded run will not necessarily sweep the same range as a fully loaded one. If you're chasing a specific low-end, set the run up at its final fixture count before judging the range.
7) What finish does the WAC 9000-MLV external dimmer come in?
One finish only: black on aluminum, ordered as 9000-MLV-BK. Since it installs inside a weatherproof junction box rather than sitting exposed, the finish rarely drives the selection here.
