WAC Lighting WAC-WS-W11914 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC Fiction WS-W11914 wall sconce be used in an exposed outdoor location like an entry wall or breezeway?
Yes. The Fiction WS-W11914 is wet location rated and carries an IP65 rating along with ETL and cETL listings, so direct rain exposure on an open entry wall or balcony is within its rating. It is listed for both indoor and outdoor use, so the same fixture can run inside a lobby or corridor and outside on the facade.
2) Will the WS-W11914 sconce run on 277V building power, or do I need a 120V circuit?
It runs on any of the three. The Fiction sconce uses a universal input driver covering 120V, 240V and 277V, so the same part number works on a residential 120V circuit or a commercial 277V lighting branch without an external transformer. The driver sits inside the fixture, so there is no remote driver to find a place for.
3) What size junction box opening does the Fiction LED sconce cover, and how much wall does it take up?
The backplate is 5.63 inches, which is what covers your outlet box. Overall the fixture is 14.13 inches in height by 5.63 inches wide, so it is a tall, narrow vertical sconce rather than a wide one, which suits narrow pilasters and spaces beside a door frame.
4) Will the WAC Fiction sconce work on my existing dimmer?
Only on an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer. The Fiction sconce dims smoothly and continuously on ELV, so a standard incandescent/TRIAC wall dimmer or a 0-10V control is the wrong pairing and will usually give flicker or dead travel. Budget for an ELV dimmer per circuit when you order.
5) Does this WAC sconce meet California Title 24 and ADA requirements for a corridor or exterior walkway?
Yes on both counts. The Fiction sconce is listed as ADA compliant, so it is acceptable where projection limits apply on walkways and corridors, and it is both Title 24 and Title 20 compliant for California projects. It is not Energy Star rated, so if a utility rebate program requires Energy Star, this one will not qualify.
6) How much light does this 9W LED sconce actually put out, and is it bright enough for an entry?
It delivers 557 lumens at 9 watts in a flood distribution at 3000K warm white. That is accent and wayfinding level output, front lit through an etched acrylic panel, so it reads as a decorative facade and door-surround light rather than a security floodlight. If you need high illuminance on a parking area or stair, specify a dedicated area or step light instead.
7) Can the lamp be replaced in the WS-W11914, or is the LED permanent?
The LED is integrated, one light engine, and it ships with the fixture. There is no socket and no replaceable bulb, so maintenance is fixture replacement at end of life rather than relamping. Rated average life is 50,000 hours, which is why it is a common pick for high-mount or hard-to-reach exterior positions.
8) Is this a hardwired fixture, and does it throw light up and down?
Hardwired only, no cord or plug, so it needs a junction box and an electrician. It wall mounts and distributes up and down from the front lit panel, which puts a wash on the wall above and below rather than a single downward pool.
9) What finish and color temperature does the Fiction WS-W11914 come in?
It is sold in black with a 3000K warm white output, part number WS-W11914-BK. Custom CCT is a special order item from WAC. The housing is aluminum with a white acrylic diffuser, so the black exterior is the only visible finish decision you make.
