LED Hardscape strip lights are the ideal low profile lighting solution to graze walls, decks and patios, handrails, bench seats, fences or stone work in any landscape. Hardscape strips are available in 3in, 6in, 12in, and 18in sizes and can conveniently adapt into an existing 12V landscape lighting system. 1) Can I add the WAC 7182 18-inch hardscape strip light to an existing 12V landscape lighting system?
Yes, the 7182 runs on 12V and drops into an existing low voltage landscape system. It's hardwired, with 36 inches of low voltage wire on the fixture and two Ideal direct burial nuts in the box for the splice. You do need a magnetic or electronic 12V power supply on the run; WAC's stainless steel landscape transformers cover it at 75W (9075-TRN-SS), 150W (9150-TRN-SS), 300W (9300-TRN-SS) and 600W (9600-TRN-SS).
2) How many WAC 7182 hardscape strips can I put on one 75W landscape transformer?
Size the run off VA, not watts. The 7182 draws up to 5.1VA each at 9-15V AC input, so a 75W supply carries roughly 14 fixtures at full load, a 150W around 29, a 300W around 58. Leave headroom for voltage drop on long runs. The fixture is listed at 3.1W actual LED draw.
3) Will the WAC 7182 strip light survive being buried under a capstone and hit with a pressure washer?
It's built for it. The 7182 is factory sealed and water tight to IP66, which covers high pressure water jets, and it's wet location rated for outdoor use. The housing is cast k-alloy aluminum. A stainless steel capstone bracket ships with the fixture for exactly that under-cap mounting.
4) What are the actual dimensions of the WAC 7182 hardscape light, and will it tuck under a stone cap or a handrail?
The 7182 measures 18 inches long, 3.13 inches wide and 1 inch high, with a 0.58 inch backplate height. That 1 inch profile is what lets it hide under a stone cap course, beneath a bench seat lip, or on the underside of a handrail without being seen. Mounting is two screws into the substrate, and mounting is reversible so the fixture can be oriented either way.
5) Can I switch the WAC 7182 between 2700K and 3000K, or do I have to order the color temperature I want?
No need to choose at order time. Every 7182 carries 27/30 in the part number, which means an integral switch on the fixture toggles between 2700K and 3000K dual CCT. Set it in the field to match the rest of the property. The same 27/30 models have a quick release feature so the LED module can be swapped later without pulling the whole assembly apart.
6) Should I use an 18 inch hardscape strip or a shorter one for lighting a seat wall?
Pick the length off the course you're grazing. The WAC hardscape strips come in 3, 6, 12 and 18 inch lengths; the 18 inch 7182 puts out 400 lumens and is the one for long uninterrupted runs of seat wall, bench or deck fascia where you want continuous wash with fewer fixtures and fewer splices. Short runs, returns, corners and step risers are where the 3 and 6 inch versions earn their place, since an 18 inch body simply won't fit a 12 inch riser cleanly.
7) Will the WAC 7182 hardscape light dim, and what dimmer do I need?
It dims smooth and continuous down to 10 percent, but only on a magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer. Put it on a standard incandescent or ELV dimmer and you'll get flicker, drop out, or no dimming at all. The MLV dimmer goes on the line side of the transformer, not between the transformer and the fixture.
8) Do I need to buy mounting hardware separately for the WAC 7182 strip light?
Everything to mount and land it is in the box: the complete fixture with replaceable LED, a stainless steel capstone bracket, a hardware pack, 36 inches of wire and two Ideal direct burial wire nuts. Aiming clips are part of the mounting options too. The only thing you supply is the 12V power supply and the run wire back to it.
9) When an LED in a hardscape strip fails, do I have to dig out the capstone to replace the whole fixture?
No. The 7182 ships with a replaceable LED module, and the 27/30 dual CCT models have a quick release that lets the module come out for service without demolishing the stone work around it.
