WAC Lighting WAC-FM-21728 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC Elektron FM-21728 be mounted on a wall as a sconce, or is it ceiling only?
The 28-inch Elektron mounts three ways: flush to the ceiling, on a wall as a sconce, or suspended as a pendant using the included downrods (three 12-inch and one 6-inch). Mounted tight to the ceiling it sits at 7 inches of height; stacking the downrods takes it out to 51 inches. The driver sits in the 4-inch junction box, so you need that box in the wall or ceiling either way.
2) What dimmer works with the WAC FM-21728 LED flush mount?
Use an electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer. On an ELV control the fixture dims smoothly from 100 percent down to 10 percent. A standard incandescent/forward-phase wall dimmer is not the right control here, so if you are standardizing a building on one dimmer type, spec ELV for these.
3) Will the FM-21728 run on 277V for a commercial job?
Yes. The integrated driver is universal input, 120V, 240V or 277V, so the same fixture works on a residential 120V circuit or a 277V commercial lighting branch without ordering a different part number.
4) Can I use this WAC Elektron fixture in a bathroom or a covered porch?
It is damp location rated and IP44, which covers a bathroom ceiling and a covered exterior area like a soffit, porch, or breezeway. It is not a wet location fixture, so keep it out of direct rain, spray, or an uncovered location.
5) Does the FM-21728 meet California Title 24 for a residential project?
Yes, the Elektron 28-inch is listed as both Title 24 compliant and Title 20 compliant. It carries ETL and cETL listings for US and Canada. It is not Energy Star rated and it is not an ADA compliant fixture, which matters if you are wall mounting it in a corridor or other path of travel where projection limits apply.
6) How much light does the 28 inch Elektron put out, and is 30W enough for a bedroom or hallway?
2525 lumens from 30 watts at 3000K, with a flood distribution through the white acrylic diffuser. That is general ambient output suitable for a bedroom, hall, or dining area of moderate size. The LEDs are edge-lit into the acrylic rather than aimed down, so it reads as even glow rather than a downlight.
7) Can the LED be replaced in the WAC FM-21728, or is the whole fixture disposable?
The LED is integrated, not a lamp in a socket, so there is nothing to relamp. It is rated 50,000 average hours, which is why WAC describes it as maintenance free. For an MRO buyer that means no lamp SKU to stock, but a driver or board level service call rather than a bulb swap at end of life.
8) What finishes does the WAC Elektron FM-21728 come in?
Two finishes, both at 3000K: Brushed Aluminum (FM-21728-AL) and Black (FM-21728-BK). The body is aluminum with a white acrylic diffuser. Custom color temperatures are available by special order if a project spec calls for something other than 3000K.
9) How big is the canopy on the FM-21728, and will it cover my existing ceiling box?
The backplate is 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches, so it covers a standard 4-inch round or octagon ceiling box with room to spare. The fixture itself is a 28-inch diameter disc only 7 inches deep when mounted flush, so plan for that footprint on the ceiling or wall.
10) I have a two story foyer. Can I hang the Elektron lower than the downrods allow?
Out of the box you get three 12-inch rods and one 6-inch rod, which stack to a 51-inch overall height from the ceiling. For a taller drop, WAC offers additional downrods separately. Also note this is a hardwired fixture, not a cord-hung pendant, so the drop is fixed once the rods are assembled.
