WAC Lighting 3in LED 12V Adjustable Inground Recessed Light 5031-27

3in Inground Recessed Light LED 12V with Adjustable Beam Angle and Integral Brightness Control 2700K

Function meets durability with this LED 3in inground light available in 12V or 120V and 2700K or 3000K color temperatures. A twist of the light engine inside of the housing at indexed intervals allows fixed beam angle adjustment from flood to spot while a mechanical dial at the base of the light engine provides smooth integral brightness control. The light engine can be tilted in two 10 degree intervals and rotated to cast light in any direction. One sku fits most applications, eliminating the need to choose from dozens of light bulbs with varying light outputs when compared with traditional landscape lights. This well light has a removeable cover that is gasketed to create a water tight seal with IP66 rating for protection against high-pressure water jets and outdoor elements. Includes a 3ft lead wire with two gel filled direct burial wire nuts. Casted using a special k-alloy aluminum that is engineered to withstand the most challenging environments. Solid brass coated in bronze (-BBR finish) is available for enhanced protection against corrosive elements and is recommended for use in coastal or marine environments. A magnetic or electronic power supply is required (sold separately) for 12V fixtures. A variety of accessories are sold separately for additional mounting and glare control options.

WAC Lighting WAC-5031-27 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the WAC 5031-27 inground light need a transformer, or can I wire it straight to line voltage?
The 5031-27 is the 12V version, so it needs a power supply. Input is 9-15V AC, 50/60Hz, and a magnetic or electronic transformer is required and sold separately. Do not connect it to a 120V circuit. WAC also builds this 3 inch inground fixture in a 120V configuration if you would rather skip the transformer entirely.
2) Can one WAC 5031 inground light cover both a tight uplight on a column and a wider wash on a hedge?
Yes, and that is the point of the fixture. Twisting the light engine inside the housing at indexed intervals sets the beam at 15, 30, 45 or 60 degrees, so one part number covers spot through flood instead of stocking multiple lamp wattages and spreads. A mechanical dial at the base of the light engine gives continuous brightness control from 2 to 12W, 70 to 505 lumens, so you can balance two fixtures on the same run without changing anything electrically.
3) Will an inground light survive sitting in a spot that puddles or gets hit by sprinklers?
The 5031 has a removable cover gasketed to a water tight seal and is IP67 rated, protected against temporary immersion, and UL and cUL 1838 listed for wet locations. Sprinkler spray and a shallow puddle after rain are within that. It ships with direct burial gel-filled wire nuts so the splice underground is sealed too.
4) Should I order the Bronze on Brass or the Bronze on Aluminum version of the WAC 5031-27?
Two finishes are built: 5031-27BZ is bronze over k-alloy aluminum, a cast alloy engineered for hard outdoor service, and 5031-27BBR is solid brass coated in bronze. Specify the BBR brass build for coastal or marine sites, or anywhere salt spray and corrosive soil are in play. Inland landscape work is fine on the aluminum body.
5) What else do I have to buy to finish a WAC 5031 inground light install?
Budget for a transformer, which is required on the 12V fixture and not included. The fixture itself comes with lead wire and two gel-filled direct burial wire nuts, so the splice is covered. Beyond that, WAC sells accessories separately for mounting and glare control, including a concrete pour kit for setting the housing in a hardscape. If you are dimming, add a remote MLV dimmer.
6) How far can the light engine be aimed in a WAC 5031 inground well light after it is set in the ground?
The engine tilts in two 10 degree increments, plus or minus 20 degrees total, and rotates a full circle inside the housing. So you can bury the housing level and still aim the beam at a wall or tree off to one side. That matters on inground work because once the fixture is set in grade you cannot re-point the can itself.
7) Can the WAC 5031 inground light be dimmed from a controller, or only at the fixture?
Both. There is an integral dial on the light engine for setting output during aiming, and the fixture also dims smoothly and continuously from a remote magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer. Use an MLV dimmer, not a forward-phase incandescent or ELV type, or you will get flicker and dropout at the low end.
8) Will the light at the far end of a long 12V landscape run look dimmer than the first fixture?
Not with this one. The 5031 maintains constant lumen output against voltage drop, and it accepts anything from 9 to 15V AC, so fixtures late in a run hold the same brightness as the ones near the transformer. That tolerance also means you have real latitude in run length compared with halogen well lights.
9) Is a 3 inch inground well light the right choice for lighting a walkway, or should I use a path light?
An inground fixture like the 5031 sits flush in grade, so it will not be hit by mowers, snow shovels or vandals and it keeps sight lines clear, which is why property managers use it in plazas and entry walks. It throws light upward, so it is what you want for grazing a wall or uplighting a tree or column. If you need pooled illumination on the walking surface itself with the source shielded above eye level, a staked path light does that better. For an inground run near seating or windows, order the glare control accessories, since the aperture is at foot level.
