Function meets durability with this LED 3in inground light available in 12V or 120V and 2700K or 3000K color temperatures. 1) Can the WAC 5031-CC inground light run straight off line voltage, or do I need a transformer?
It's a 12V low-voltage fixture and cannot go on line voltage. Input range is 9-15V AC, 50/60Hz, so a magnetic or electronic low-voltage power supply is required and is sold separately. If your run is already on 120V, you need the 120V version of the fixture instead.
2) Is a brass inground light worth it over aluminum for a coastal property?
For coastal or marine sites, yes. The 5031-CCBBR is solid die-cast brass coated in bronze, and WAC specifically recommends the -BBR brass finish for enhanced protection against corrosive elements in coastal or marine environments. The standard version of this 3in inground light is cast k-alloy aluminum, which is engineered for harsh environments but is not the finish called out for salt air.
3) Do I have to pick a beam spread and color temperature when I order this inground light?
No, and that's the point of the fixture. One SKU covers most applications: the light engine twists at indexed intervals inside the housing to set a fixed beam angle of 15, 30, 45 or 60 degrees, and the CC version is color changing between 2700K and 3000K, set in the app. So you are not choosing from dozens of lamp outputs and color temps up front the way you would with a traditional landscape well light.
4) Will this hold up in a planting bed that floods or an area with sprinklers?
Yes. The housing has a removeable cover gasketed to form a water tight seal, and the fixture is UL and cUL 1838 listed for wet locations. It carries an IP67 rating, meaning protection from temporary immersion, so standing water in a bed or irrigation spray is within what it is built for.
5) How do I aim an inground light at a tree or wall after it's set in grade?
Aiming is done at the light engine, not by moving the housing. The engine tilts in two 10 degree increments (plus or minus 20 degrees total) and rotates a full circle, so you can throw light in any direction and off vertical once the housing is buried. Beam spread is set by twisting the engine to one of the indexed positions, and a mechanical dial at the base of the engine gives integral brightness control.
6) Can I dim these WAC inground lights from a wall dimmer or control system?
Not with an external wall dimmer. Color and brightness on the CC version are controlled over Bluetooth through WAC's free iOS or Android landscape lighting app, which adjusts all your color changing compatible landscape fixtures from a phone or tablet. There is also a mechanical brightness dial on the light engine itself for a set-and-forget level at install.
7) What wiring connections come with the WAC 5031 inground light?
It ships with a lead wire already attached to the fixture plus two gel-filled direct burial wire nuts, so the splice to your low-voltage run is covered in the box. What is not included is the transformer, which is required, and any mounting or glare-control accessories such as the concrete pour kit, all sold separately.
8) Is the color rendering good enough for landscape and facade lighting?
