WAC Lighting WAC-PD-94940 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the WAC Solaris 40 inch pendant be hung on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?
Yes. The Solaris pendant has an integral swivel at the canopy for sloped ceilings, so no separate sloped-ceiling adapter is needed. The three rings also rotate independently, so you can square the look up after the rod is set. It mounts to a ceiling box and is hardwired.
2) How low can the Solaris 40 inch pendant hang, and what rods come in the box?
Hanging height runs 14 inches at the shortest to 52 inches using the supplied rods. The box includes three 12 inch down rods and one 6 inch rod, plus 120 inches of wire so the pendant can be extended to a total of 120 inches from the ceiling. Going past the included rods means ordering additional down rods separately.
3) What dimmer works with the WAC Solaris LED pendant?
It dims on an electronic low voltage (ELV), TRIAC (forward phase), or 0-10V dimmer. The driver is universal input, accepting 120V, 240V, or 277V, so it drops onto a 277V commercial circuit as easily as a 120V residential one. Match the dimmer to the circuit voltage as well as the dimming protocol.
4) Is the Solaris pendant rated for a covered porch or a bathroom?
Damp location rated, with an IP44 rating, so a covered porch, a breezeway, or a bathroom outside the shower is fine. It is not wet rated, so keep it out of direct rain or spray. It also carries ETL and cETL listings for US and Canadian jobs.
5) Will the Solaris pendant canopy cover my existing 4 inch octagon ceiling box?
The round backplate measures 8.63 inches, so it covers a standard 4 inch octagon or round ceiling box and the usual patch ring around it with room to spare. The fixture is hardwired to that box, not plug-in.
6) Can I change the bulbs in this pendant, or is the LED built in?
The LED is integrated, so there are no lamps to replace or specify. The array is rated 50,000 hours and draws 31W total for 2,098 lumens at 3000K. When the LED reaches end of life the fixture is replaced, not relamped, which is worth knowing for an MRO spec where you are used to stocking spare lamps.
7) Does this pendant meet California Title 24 for a residential job?
Yes, the Solaris pendant is listed as both Title 24 compliant and Title 20 compliant, which covers California residential lighting and appliance efficiency requirements. It is not Energy Star listed, and it is not ADA compliant, though ADA is a wall-fixture concern and does not apply to a ceiling pendant.
8) What finishes does the 40 inch Solaris pendant come in, and what is the part number for each?
Three finishes: Aged Brass (PD-94940-AB), Black (PD-94940-BK), and Chrome (PD-94940-CH). All three ship at 3000K. Custom color temperatures are available by special order.
9) What kind of light does this throw, and is one enough over a large island?
The Solaris puts out 2,098 lumens at 3000K through a white acrylic diffuser with a flood distribution, so it is soft, spread ambient light rather than a task downlight. Over a long island or a big table you will typically want recessed or under-cabinet light doing the task work with this as the decorative layer.
10) What is the Solaris pendant actually made of?
Aluminum body for the three rings and the canopy, with an acrylic diffuser carrying the light. Aluminum keeps the weight down on a 40 inch diameter fixture and holds up in the damp locations it is rated for.
