WAC Lighting WAC-PD-W17216 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the WAC Amherst LED outdoor pendant be hung under a covered porch or an open, exposed soffit?
Either one. The Amherst pendant is wet location listed and IP65 rated, so direct rain exposure is acceptable, not just damp covered areas. It is also rated for indoor or outdoor use, so the same fixture can carry over from an exterior entry to an interior stairwell or breezeway without switching models.
2) What junction box and mounting does the Amherst 5.5 inch LED pendant need?
It is a hardwired, ceiling-mounted pendant on 120V with a 6 inch backplate, and it mounts to a pancake junction box because the AC LED design needs no remote driver or transformer inside the box. Sloped ceilings are supported, so a porch ceiling with pitch is fine.
3) What extension rods come with the Amherst outdoor pendant, and can I get a longer drop?
The pendant ships with four rods: one 6 inch and three 12 inch sections, plus the wire needed to make that drop. Hanging is by rod rather than cable or chain. If your ceiling height calls for a longer drop than the included rods give you, additional rods are sold separately.
4) Will the Amherst LED pendant work on the dimmers already in my building?
It dims on electronic low voltage (ELV) or TRIAC dimmers. Standard incandescent/MLV wall dimmers are not the listed control type, so if your existing exterior circuit is on an MLV dimmer, plan on swapping the dimmer to an ELV or TRIAC model. There is no separate driver to match, since the LED runs on AC line voltage at 120V.
5) Does this WAC Amherst pendant meet California Title 24 and dark sky requirements?
Yes on both. It is listed Title 24 and Title 20 compliant for California energy code work, and it is a dark sky fixture, which matters in jurisdictions and HOAs that restrict uplight. The lantern is a downlight with flood distribution. It is also listed ADA compliant and carries ETL and cETL listings for the US and Canada.
6) Do I need to order lamps for the Amherst pendant, and what happens when the LED reaches end of life?
No lamps to order. It uses one integrated LED module, included, rated at 50,000 hours average life. There is no socket or replaceable bulb, so maintenance is limited to cleaning the glass. The open bottom on the lantern makes that reachable without pulling the fixture down.
7) How big is the 5.5 inch Amherst pendant, and will it look right over a narrow entry or a stair landing?
The lantern body measures 5.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches deep and 15.5 inches tall, with a 6 inch backplate at the ceiling. That is a small-scale lantern, suited to a single entry door, a narrow walkway, or spacing in a row along a loggia rather than as a solo feature over a wide opening. The matching Amherst wall sconce comes in 14, 18 and 22 inch sizes if you want the same look on the walls.
8) What color light does the Amherst pendant put out, and will it match the rest of my exterior fixtures?
3000K soft white with a 90 CRI. On a property where the other exterior heads are 3000K, this drops in without a visible color shift; if your site is standardized on 2700K or 4000K, it will read differently. The color temperature is fixed, not field selectable.
9) What is the load on the circuit if I run several Amherst pendants off one exterior run?
Each fixture draws 19.24W at 120V, so a row of them adds up slowly. The LED is line voltage AC with no transformer, which means nothing extra has to be mounted remotely or inside the box, and the whole run can sit on a single ELV or TRIAC dimmer.
10) How is the Amherst outdoor pendant built, and how does it hold up in a coastal or high-traffic commercial setting?
The housing is aluminum with clear seeded glass panels. Aluminum avoids the rust problem you get with steel lanterns on exposed exterior runs, and the IP65 wet rating covers driving rain. Finish offered is black.
