WAC Lighting WAC-4071 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I add a WAC 4071 step light to an existing 12V landscape lighting system, or does it need its own supply?
The 4071 runs on a 12V low voltage circuit and drops onto an existing 12V landscape system. It accepts 9-15V AC input, draws 2W, and needs either a magnetic or an electronic 12V power supply, which is not included with the fixture. WAC's stainless steel outdoor transformers are the recommended match: 9075-TRN-SS at 75W, 9150-TRN-SS at 150W, 9300-TRN-SS at 300W, and 9600-TRN-SS at 600W. At 2W per fixture there is plenty of headroom on even the 75W unit for a run of these. The fixture is hardwired, with a 6 inch wire lead to make up to.
2) Will a WAC 4071 step light hold up on an oceanfront property?
For coastal or marine exposure, order the stainless steel version, 4071-27SS, 4071-30SS or 4071-AMSS depending on color temperature. The standard body is cast k-alloy aluminum, and the black, bronze and white painted versions are the same alloy. WAC calls out stainless steel specifically for corrosive environments. All versions are factory sealed and water tight at IP66, wet location rated, and UL and cUL listed.
3) What size opening and junction box do I need to rough in for a WAC 4071 step light?
The 4071 measures 5 inches wide by 3 inches high with a 1.5 inch depth, and the backplate height is 3.13 inches. It ships with a junction box mounting bracket and hardware, so it mounts to a standard box rather than needing a proprietary housing. Note the fixture is not reversible, so set the box at the orientation you want the light thrown before you close up the wall or riser.
4) Does the WAC 4071 step light meet ADA and California Title 24 for a commercial stairwell?
Both are covered. The 4071 is ADA compliant and Title 24 compliant, and it is also Dark Sky, which matters where a jurisdiction limits uplight on exterior fixtures. It carries UL and cUL 1838 listing and an IP66 rating for wet locations. It is not Energy Star rated.
5) How do I pick between 2700K, 3000K and amber on the WAC 4071 step light?
Color temperature is fixed at the factory on the 4071, so it is an order decision, not a field one. 2700K is the warmest white and blends with incandescent-era exterior fixtures. 3000K reads slightly cleaner and is the more common spec on newer commercial work. Amber is the choice where a dark sky ordinance, a turtle-nesting rule, or a resort's night-sky policy limits blue content. Whichever you pick, the LED is 90 CRI and rated 60,000 hours. Match one number across the whole run of steps, since two temperatures side by side on a stair will read as a defect.
6) Can the WAC 4071 step light be dimmed?
Yes, but only on a magnetic low voltage dimmer. The 4071 dims smooth and continuous down to 10 percent with an MLV dimmer. An electronic low voltage or standard incandescent dimmer is the wrong control here. The dimmer goes on the line side of the transformer, so the transformer you choose has to be dimming-rated too.
7) Is 60 lumens enough light out of a 5 inch step light, and what does the frosted lens do?
Sixty lumens is intentionally low. The 4071 is a 2W marker fixture for defining a tread edge, a path, or a wall base, not for lighting an area. The frosted glass lens diffuses the LED so you see a soft wash rather than a hot point of glare at eye level on a stair. If you need to actually illuminate a landing or a walkway surface, that is a different fixture type, a path light or a wall wash, not a diffused step light.
8) Do I have to buy a colored lens kit separately for the WAC 4071 step light?
No. Interchangeable lenses in clear, amber, red and blue ship in the box with the 4071, along with the step light itself, a replaceable LED, the junction box mounting bracket and hardware. Colored lenses are a useful way to differentiate a route or mark a hazard on the same fixture family without ordering a second SKU.
9) If the LED fails in a WAC 4071 step light, do I have to replace the whole fixture?
The LED in the 4071 is a replaceable module, so a failure does not mean pulling the fixture and re-wiring. There is no lamp base to source, it is an integrated LED assembly supplied with the light. For a property manager standardizing a stair or a multi-family walkway, that is the difference between a service call and a fixture change-out. Rated life is 60,000 hours.
10) Can a WAC 4071 diffused step light be used indoors as well as outside?
It works either way. The 4071 is rated for indoor and outdoor use and carries a wet location rating with IP66 sealing, so an exposed exterior stair, a covered breezeway, or an interior stairwell are all in scope. Indoors you still need the 12V supply, so it only makes sense where you are already running a low voltage system or willing to add a transformer.
11) Which finishes does the WAC 4071 come in and are they all available in every color temperature?
Four finishes, and each one is offered in all three light outputs. Black, bronze, stainless steel and white, in 2700K (4071-27BK, -27BZ, -27SS, -27WT), 3000K (4071-30BK, -30BZ, -30SS, -30WT), and amber (4071-AMBK, -AMBZ, -AMSS, -AMWT).
