12V step and wall lights by WAC Landscape Lighting are offered in a variety of styles and can be installed on existing 12V landscape lighting systems. WAC Lighting WAC-4031 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I add this WAC 12V step light to an existing landscape lighting system, or does it need its own transformer?
The WAC 4031 scoop step light runs on an existing 12V landscape system. It accepts 9-15V AC input and draws 2W (3VA), so it can tie into a run you already have. If you are starting fresh, a magnetic or electronic 12V power supply is required and is sold separately. WAC lists stainless steel outdoor transformers in 75W (9075-TRN-SS), 150W (9150-TRN-SS), 300W (9300-TRN-SS) and 600W (9600-TRN-SS). Size the transformer against the total connected load, not just this fixture.
2) Will this WAC step light dim, and what kind of dimmer do I need?
It dims, but only on a magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer. On an MLV dimmer the output is smooth and continuous down to 10 percent. A standard incandescent or ELV dimmer is not the right control for this fixture, so specify MLV at the switch leg when you spec the job.
3) Is this WAC 4031 step light rated for outdoor use in rain and sprinkler spray?
Wet location rated, and sealed at the factory to IP66, which covers high-pressure water jets as well as rain and irrigation spray. It carries UL and cUL listing under 1838 for low voltage landscape lighting. It can be used indoors or outdoors.
4) What size opening and junction box do I need for the WAC 5 inch horizontal scoop step light?
The fixture measures 5 inches wide, 3.18 inches high and 1.75 inches deep, with a 3.13 inch backplate height. It ships with a junction box mounting bracket and hardware, and it is hardwired with a 6 inch wire lead, so plan your box location within reach of that lead.
5) Which color temperature should I order for stair and path lighting, and can I change it later?
Three light colors are offered: 2700K warm white, 3000K warm white, and amber. Color temperature is set at the order, so it has to be specified up front. Each is available in black, bronze and white, for nine combinations in total. The fixture ships with interchangeable lenses in clear, amber, red and blue, so lens color can be changed in the field even though the LED color temperature cannot.
6) Does this WAC step light meet ADA and California Title 24 for a commercial stairwell or exterior path?
Both. The 4031 is listed as ADA compliant and Title 24 compliant, which matters on institutional, hospitality and multi-family work in California and on any project where a wall-mounted fixture has to stay inside the protruding objects limit. It is also Dark Sky compliant for jurisdictions with outdoor lighting ordinances.
7) Can this step light be mounted upside down to throw light upward?
No. The 4031 scoop is not reversible mounting, so it installs in one orientation only and directs light downward across the tread or path. If a job needs an uplight component, that has to come from a separate fixture.
8) Is this WAC step light durable enough for a coastal or oceanfront property?
The standard black, bronze and white fixtures are cast K-alloy aluminum, which WAC builds for demanding outdoor environments. For salt air specifically, WAC recommends the stainless steel (-SS) or solid brass coated in bronze (-BBR) versions of its 12V step and wall lights for coastal and marine use. Those corrosion finishes are a different order code than the black, bronze and white offered here.
9) How bright is a 2W LED step light, and will one be enough per stair run?
Output is about 60 lumens with the LED rated up to 68 lumens, from a 2W integrated LED at 90 CRI behind a frosted glass lens. That is deliberate low level accent light for treads, risers and path edges, not area lighting. On a stair run, expect to space several fixtures rather than rely on one. LED life is rated at 60,000 hours.
10) If the LED fails years from now, do I have to replace the whole step light?
No. The LED module in the 4031 is replaceable, and it ships installed, so the housing stays in the wall. That matters for MRO and property management crews standardizing a building on one fixture, since a failed unit becomes a module swap rather than a re-cut and re-wire.
