WAC Lighting WAC-4041 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I add the WAC 4041 step light to an existing 12V landscape lighting system?
Yes. The WAC 4041 vertical scoop step light runs on a 12V low voltage system and accepts an input of 9-15V AC, so it drops onto an existing 12V landscape run. It does need a magnetic or electronic 12V power supply, which is not included with the fixture. WAC's own stainless steel outdoor transformers cover it: 9075-TRN-SS at 75W, 9150-TRN-SS at 150W, 9300-TRN-SS at 300W, and 9600-TRN-SS at 600W. At 2W (3VA) per fixture, a single transformer carries a lot of these.
2) Will a WAC 4041 step light hold up outdoors on a coastal property?
Standard 4041 step lights are cast k-alloy aluminum with a frosted glass lens, factory sealed and IP66 rated, wet location listed to UL and cUL. That is fine for normal exterior exposure. For salt air, WAC makes the same step light family in stainless steel (-SS) or solid brass coated in bronze (-BBR), and those are what the manufacturer recommends for coastal and marine environments. If the building is on the water, order the -SS or -BBR construction rather than the painted aluminum.
3) What size opening and junction box do I need for the WAC 4041 step light?
The 4041 measures 3.13 x 5 x 1.88 inches, with a 3.13 inch backplate height, and it ships with a junction box mounting bracket plus hardware, so it mounts to a standard box rather than needing a proprietary housing. It is hardwired, and there is 6 inches of lead wire to land on, so plan your splice within reach of the box.
4) Does the WAC 4041 step light meet ADA and Title 24 for a commercial stairway?
The 4041 is ADA compliant and Title 24 compliant, and it carries UL and cUL listing with an IP66 rating for wet locations. It is also Dark Sky, which matters on jurisdictions with outdoor lighting ordinances. For a code stairway or an exterior path of egress on a commercial or multi-family property, that combination is what the inspector is looking for. It is not Energy Star rated.
5) Can I mount the WAC 4041 scoop step light upside down to throw light upward?
No. The 4041 is a vertical scoop and is not reversible, so it installs in one orientation only and washes light downward onto the tread or path. If you need the light aimed the other way, pick a different fixture in the step light family rather than flipping this one.
6) Which color temperature should I order for WAC 4041 step lights, 2700K or 3000K?
Three choices, and you have to pick at order time because the LED is integrated and not field-swappable: 2700K warm white, 3000K warm white, or amber. 2700K reads warmer and is the common pick for residential stairs and patios where it needs to match interior lamping. 3000K is slightly cleaner and holds up better against stone and concrete hardscape. Amber is the low-impact option for coastal and wildlife-sensitive sites and for anywhere you want minimal blue light at night. All three come in black, bronze, or white.
7) Can WAC 4041 step lights be dimmed?
Yes, but only on a magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer. With an MLV dimmer in the circuit the 4041 dims smoothly and continuously down to 10 percent. A standard incandescent or ELV dimmer is not the control this fixture calls for, so specify MLV when you spec the panel or the transformer.
8) How bright is a 2W WAC 4041 step light, and how many do I need along a stair run?
Each 4041 puts out 60 lumens at 2W, with a CRI of 90. That is deliberately low, accent-level output meant to mark the tread and the edge, not to light the whole area, so these get spaced along a run rather than used one at a time. The frosted glass lens spreads the output and keeps the source from glaring back at someone coming down the stairs. Rated life is 60,000 hours.
9) What is the exact part number for a WAC 4041 step light in bronze at 3000K?
Bronze at 3000K is 4041-30BZ. The numbering runs 4041 plus the color temperature plus the finish code: 27 for 2700K, 30 for 3000K, AM for amber; BK black, BZ bronze, WT white. So 4041-27BK is 2700K black, 4041-AMWT is amber white, and so on across all nine combinations.
10) Can I change the lens color on a WAC 4041 step light after it is installed?
Yes. The 4041 ships with interchangeable lenses in clear, amber, red, and blue, along with a replaceable LED, the junction box mounting bracket, and mounting hardware. Useful on properties where you want red or blue marker lighting on specific openings without stocking a separate fixture.
11) When the LED in a WAC 4041 step light eventually fails, do I have to replace the whole fixture?
No. The LED module in the 4041 is replaceable, even though it is an integrated LED rather than a socketed lamp, so the cast housing and the junction box bracket stay in the wall. For a property manager standardizing a large stair or path installation, that is the difference between a lamp change and pulling fixtures. Rated life is 60,000 hours before that comes up.
12) Can a WAC 4041 step light be used indoors, or is it outdoor only?
Both. The 4041 is rated for indoor and outdoor use and carries a wet location listing, so it works on an interior stairwell, a covered breezeway, or fully exposed exterior steps. The limiting factor indoors is not the fixture, it is the 12V supply: you still need a magnetic or electronic 12V power supply, sold separately.
