WAC Lighting WAC-4051 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I add the WAC 4051 step light to an existing 12V landscape lighting system, or does it need its own transformer?
It runs off an existing 12V landscape system. The 4051 accepts 9-15V AC input and draws 2W (3VA), so it can be tapped onto a run you already have as long as the transformer has capacity left. If you are starting from scratch, a magnetic or electronic 12V power supply is required and is sold separately. WAC's stainless steel outdoor transformers are the recommended match: 9075-TRN-SS (75W), 9150-TRN-SS (150W), 9300-TRN-SS (300W), and 9600-TRN-SS (600W).
2) What dimming control works with the WAC 4051 12V step light?
Magnetic low voltage only. The 4051 dims smooth and continuous down to 10% when it is run through a magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer. Pair it with a magnetic transformer and an MLV-rated wall dimmer; an ELV or standard incandescent dimmer is not the control this fixture is specified for.
3) Which finish should I spec for a WAC step light on a coastal or oceanfront property?
For salt air, go to the stainless steel (-SS) or solid brass coated in bronze (-BBR) construction that WAC offers on its 12V step and wall lights; those are the ones called out for corrosive and marine environments. The standard 4051 body is cast K-alloy aluminum, which WAC builds for demanding outdoor exposure but is not the marine-grade option. Finishes on the 4051 itself are black, bronze, and white.
4) What size opening and backing do I need to rough in for the WAC 4051 step light?
The fixture measures 5 inches wide, 3.13 inches high, and projects 1.75 inches, with a 3.13 inch backplate height. It mounts to a junction box using the included mounting bracket, and it comes with a 6 inch wire lead, so the box needs to sit close behind the finished face. It is hardwired, not plug-in.
5) Is the WAC 4051 step light rated for direct rain and sprinkler spray?
Yes. It is factory sealed and water tight with an IP66 rating, which covers high-pressure water jets, and it carries a Wet location rating along with UL and cUL listing to 1838. Sprinkler overspray, driving rain, and pressure washing around the fixture are all within what it is built for. It can also be used indoors.
6) Will the WAC 4051 step light meet ADA and California Title 24 on a commercial project?
Both are covered. The 4051 is listed ADA compliant, which matters because at 1.75 inches of projection it stays inside the protrusion limit for a wall-mounted fixture in a circulation path, and it is Title 24 compliant for California energy code work. It also meets Dark Sky criteria, useful where an ordinance restricts uplight.
7) How much light does a WAC 4051 louvered step light actually put out, and how far apart should I place them?
Output is modest by design: 60 lumens from a 2W integrated LED behind a frosted glass lens, with the horizontal louver throwing light downward onto the tread or path rather than into the eye. This is a wayfinding fixture, not area lighting, so plan on a run of them along a stair or wall rather than one or two trying to cover a space. CRI is 90, so surface color reads accurately.
8) Which color temperature should I order for the WAC 4051, and can I change it later?
Color temperature is set when you order: 2700K warm white, 3000K warm white, or amber. There is no field-adjustable CCT switch, so order accordingly. What you can change on site is the lens color, since the fixture ships with interchangeable clear, amber, red, and blue lenses for accent or code-driven applications.
9) When the LED in a WAC 4051 step light fails, do I have to replace the whole fixture?
No. The LED module in the 4051 is replaceable, so a failed emitter does not mean pulling the housing off the wall. Rated life is 60,000 hours on the original module, which is a long horizon for a stair or path light running dusk to dawn. For a property manager standardizing a building, that means one fixture body and a cheap module as the recurring maintenance item.
10) How many WAC 4051 step lights can I run on one 12V transformer?
Each 4051 draws 2W, listed as 3VA. Size the transformer off the VA figure and leave headroom for voltage drop on long runs. Practically, a 75W 9075-TRN-SS carries a small stair run, while the 300W 9300-TRN-SS or 600W 9600-TRN-SS is the choice when the step lights share a transformer with path and accent fixtures across a property.
