1) Does the WL-LED120 step light need a separate LED driver or transformer?
No. The WL-LED120 is direct-wired line voltage, 120V, with no driver or transformer needed. That is the practical difference from a low voltage landscape step light: you run line voltage to the J-box and terminate, no remote power supply in the run. It is hardwired only, drawing 3.5W.
2) Can this WAC louvered step light go outdoors on an exposed stair or patio wall?
Yes. It is wet location rated and sealed to IP66, so an exposed exterior stair riser, retaining wall or walkway is within rating. One caveat on finish: the brushed nickel finish is interior use only, and for coastal or salt-air sites WAC calls for the marine grade stainless steel version instead of a painted aluminum finish.
3) I have a 277V lighting circuit in my building. Can I use the WL-LED120?
Not this one. The WL-LED120 is the 120V unit. WAC builds the same step light family for 277V as a separate direct-wire version, so on a 277V commercial panel you need to order that voltage rather than this part number. Either way no driver is involved; the voltage is built into the fixture.
4) Which dimmer works with the WAC WL-LED120, and how low will it go?
It dims on an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer, smooth and continuous from 100 percent down to 10 percent. A standard incandescent or MLV dimmer is the wrong control for it. If you are commissioning a stair run, spec one ELV dimmer per circuit rather than mixing control types on the same bank.
5) What is the difference between the Amber and 3000K versions of this WAC step light?
Two light colors are offered. The amber version uses an amber diffuser lens and puts out a warm amber glow, which is what people choose for turtle-friendly coastal sites, dark-sky sensitive exteriors and low-glare pathway marking. The 3000K version is a standard warm white for general stair and wall illumination. Both are 90 CRI and share the same housing, so you can mix colors on a project without changing the trim look.
6) Will this WAC step light pass California Title 24?
Yes, in the 120V version. WAC lists the 120V WL-LED120 as CEC Title 24 compliant, which is what a California project inspector will be looking for on exterior and residential lighting. It is not Energy Star certified, so if your utility rebate program requires Energy Star specifically, this will not qualify for it.
7) If the LED fails or I want a different lens color later, do I have to replace the whole step light?
No. The LED module is replaceable, and WAC offers it in multiple colors including blue, red and amber. The faceplate is magnetic and interchangeable with tamper proof hardware that is not visible from the front, so maintenance staff can pull the plate and swap the module without cutting into the wall or disturbing the housing. For a property with existing WL-LED120 fixtures, that means you can re-lamp or change the look without a new rough-in.
8) Is this step light ETL listed, and is it ADA compliant for a stairwell?
The WL-LED120 is ETL and cETL Listed, so it is accepted in both US and Canadian jurisdictions, and WAC lists it as ADA compliant. The low profile helps there: the fixture stands only 1.75 inches off the backplate dimension and sits flush to the wall with no visible hardware, so it does not create a protruding obstruction in a corridor or stair.
9) How bright is a 3.5W LED step light like this, and how many do I need on a stairway?
Output is modest by design: the fixture is a shielded marker light, not a floodlight, at 3.5W. The louvered faceplate throws the light downward so you see the tread without looking into a glare source. For a run of stairs or a long walkway, plan on one fixture every few treads or at regular wall intervals rather than trying to light the whole area from one unit. Rated life is 50,000 hours.
10) What finishes does the WAC horizontal louvered step light come in, and will they hold up outdoors?
The 120V louvered step light is offered in black, bronze and white on die-cast aluminum, in both amber and 3000K. The housing is die-cast corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, which is fine for normal exterior exposure. For oceanfront or heavy salt-spray locations WAC recommends the marine grade stainless steel version instead.
