1) Can the WAC 4901 step light be installed without cutting in an electrical box?
No junction box needed. The 4901 surface mounts flat to the wall, stair riser, or hardscape face, so you're not opening a wall or setting a box behind it. It ships with mounting hardware and an integral lead wire, and it's hardwired rather than plug-in, so you still need a low-voltage supply run to the location. That makes it a practical retrofit on masonry, stone, and finished surfaces where a box was never roughed in.
2) What transformer or power supply does the WAC 4901 12V step light need?
It runs on 12VAC and accepts an input range of 9-15VAC, so it can tap straight into an existing landscape lighting run without its own dedicated supply. If there's no low-voltage supply at the location, you need a remote 12VAC transformer to step 120VAC down; WAC's EN-12100-RB2 is the one called out for it, and it is a separate order. The wide 9-15VAC window is what lets it sit at the far end of a long landscape run where voltage has already dropped.
3) Is the WAC 4901 louvered step light rated for outdoor and wet locations?
Wet location rated, UL and cUL listed to UL 1838, with an IP66 rating that covers rain and direct hose-stream water. It works indoors or out, and it's Dark Sky compliant because the horizontal louver throws light down at the tread rather than out at eye level. For coastal or marine sites, the die-cast solid brass version is the one to specify over the aluminum alloy body.
4) How much wall space does the WAC 9in surface mounted step light take up?
The 4901 is 9 inches wide with a 9 inch backplate, 3.13 inches high, and projects 0.88 inch off the face of the wall. That sub-inch projection is the number that matters on a stair: it stays clear of the required handrail and walking envelope, and it's why the fixture reads as a slot rather than a bump. WAC also builds this in a standard 5 inch size (model 4501) if a 9 inch face is too much light bar for the riser.
5) Will the WAC 4901 step light dim, and what kind of dimmer does it take?
It dims smoothly and continuously down to 10 percent, but only on the right dimmer. The fixture is magnetic low voltage (MLV) rated, and the description specifies electronic low voltage (ELV) dimming for the 10 percent bottom end. Standard incandescent or TRIAC line-voltage dimmers on the 120V side of a landscape transformer are not what this is spec'd for, and that mismatch is the usual cause of flicker or dropout at the low end on 12V LED step lights.
6) Which color temperature should I order for the WAC 4901, 2700K or 3000K?
Both are offered, in four finishes each: black, white, bronze, and bronzed brass. 2700K is the warmer, more residential tone that matches incandescent and most existing landscape paths; 3000K reads slightly cleaner and holds up better against gray stone, concrete, and modern hardscape. All eight combinations use a 90 CRI replaceable LED module, so color rendering is the same either way. Match whatever is already on the property rather than mixing, since two temperatures side by side on the same stair run are obvious at night.
7) Is the WAC 4901 bright enough to light a stairway, and how many do I need?
Each fixture draws 8W and puts out 150 lumens through a frosted glass lens, aimed down by the horizontal louver. That's tread-washing output, not area lighting, so it's spaced one per riser or every second or third step depending on run length rather than used to light a whole landing. The louver plus frosted lens is what keeps 150 lumens from becoming glare in someone's eyes as they come down.
8) Does the WAC 4901 step light meet ADA and California Title 24?
ADA compliant and Title 24 compliant, both stated by the manufacturer. 11) Can the WAC 4901 be mounted either direction, and how long is the lead wire?
