This slim low-profile step and wall light is designed to surface mount onto any application without the need for an electrical box like traditional step and wall lights, enabling the versatility to install the WAC Surface Mounted Step and Wall Light anywhere you would like. Available in a variety of finishes and color temperatures, this sleek and versatile step and wall light is sure to meet your expectations. UL and cUL listed for exterior locations with an IP66 rating to withstand rain and continuous streams of water. 1) Does the WAC 4501 step light need a junction box or electrical box behind it?
No box required. The 4501 surface mounts directly to the wall, step riser, or column face, which is the main reason it goes places a traditional recessed step light cannot. It is hardwired with a lead wire, and mounting hardware comes in the carton along with the replaceable LED module.
2) What transformer do I need to run the WAC 4501 off 120V house power?
The 4501 is a 12V fixture and accepts 9-15VAC input, so it can tap straight into an existing landscape lighting power supply. If there is no supply on site, you need a remote 12VAC transformer, WAC part EN-12100-RB2, sold separately, to step 120VAC down to 12VAC. Running it on line voltage directly will destroy it.
3) Can the WAC 4501 surface step light be used outdoors in the rain?
Yes. It is UL and cUL listed with an IP66 rating, wet location rated, and holds up to rain and continuous streams of water, so it works on exterior stairs, decks, and walls as well as indoors.
4) Will the WAC 4501 hold up on an oceanfront or coastal property?
For salt air, order the brass version. The body is a corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, with a die-cast solid brass option intended for marine and coastal environments. The Bronzed Brass finish is the brass-bodied choice, in both 2700K and 3000K.
5) How much space does the WAC 4501 take up on a step riser or wall?
It is a slim 5 inch wide fixture, 3.13 inches high (backplate is the same 3.13 inches), and projects only 0.88 inch off the surface, so it clears foot traffic on a riser and does not read as a bulky box on a wall. Need wider coverage? The same family offers a 9 inch version, model 4901.
6) Does the WAC 4501 meet Title 24 and dark sky requirements for a California exterior job?
Yes on both. The 4501 is listed as Title 24 compliant and Dark Sky, and it is also flagged ADA compliant, which matters on a 0.88 inch projection fixture in an egress stair or corridor. It is not Energy Star rated.
7) Is the WAC 4501 dimmable, and what kind of dimmer do I use?
It dims smooth and continuous down to 10 percent using an Electronic Low Voltage (ELV) dimmer on the line side of the transformer. The spec data also lists MLV dimming compatibility. Standard incandescent/TRIAC wall dimmers are not the right control for this fixture.
8) What color temperatures and finishes does the WAC 4501 come in?
Eight combinations: 2700K or 3000K, each in Black, White, Bronze, or Bronzed Brass. For a fleet of stairwells or a multi-building site, pick one temperature and one finish and stay with it, since 2700K reads noticeably warmer than 3000K side by side on the same run of steps.
9) How bright is the WAC 4501 and will it light a stair tread without glare?
It draws 4W and puts out up to 80 lumens behind a frosted glass lens, through a horizontal louvered face that aims light down onto the tread instead of into the eye. CRI is 90 and rated life is 70,000 hours. This is path and tread marking light, not area floodlighting.
10) Do I have to worry about orientation when mounting the WAC 4501 louvered step light?
Mounting is reversible, so the louvered face can be oriented to throw light the direction the application needs rather than forcing a single up or down installation. A 3ft lead wire is supplied for the connection.
11) If the LED in the WAC 4501 fails, do I replace the whole fixture?
No. The LED is a replaceable module, supplied with the fixture, so a maintenance crew can swap the light source without pulling the housing off the wall and rewiring. One LED module per fixture.
