WAC Lighting Basics and Gemini 24VDC Remote Power Supply EN-BT96

This class 2, UL & cUL listed enclosed electronic transformer is used to power Basics & Gemini Tape Light by WAC Lighting. Class 2 transformers are intrinsically safer transformers because they are compartmentalized to allow no greater than 5 amps of current to be drawn on each compartment. Enclosure cover is easy to remove. Transformer has knockouts with clips for line voltage wiring. Secondary low votlage wiring for class 2 transformers do not require conduit sheathed cable or clamp wiring techniques. This transformer has a low minimum load requirement of 1W to allow the use of LED products. May be dimmed using an electronic low voltage dimmer. Includes a 72in lead wire for Basics & Gemini, longer lead wires (T24-BS-EX2) are sold separately.
  • Fully enclosed remote power supply with knockouts and clips for line voltage wiring. Soft start, short and overload circuit protection features. For use with WAC Lighting Basics & Gemini Tape Light systems.
  • 1W Minimum load to support low load LED systems. Intrinsically safe, Class 2 transformers permit no greater than a 5 amp current to be drawn. Includes a 72in lead wire for Basics & Gemini, longer lead wires (T24-BS-EX2) are sold separately.
  • Secondary wiring for Class 2 transformers does not require conduit sheathed cable or clamp wiring techniques. Suggested low voltage wire type (Sold separately): 14 - 18 guage stranded or solid. Non-metallic sheathed cable may be used for secondary wiring in walls and ceilings.
  • Input Voltage: 120VAC, Output Voltage: 24VDC. Available in 60W and 96W options.
  • Smooth and continuous dimming with an electronic low voltage (ELV) or TRIAC dimmer. Dimmers should always be installed on the primary side of the transformer.
  • Standards: UL & cUL Listed for Damp Locations IP20 rated. CEC Title 24 & ADA Compliant.

WAC Lighting EN-BT96-24 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What power supply do I need for WAC Lighting Basics or Gemini tape light on a 120V circuit?
The WAC Lighting EN-BT96 is the 96W remote power supply built for Basics and Gemini tape light. It takes 120VAC in and puts out 24VDC, so it drives the 24V tape directly with no additional driver. It ships with a 72 inch lead wire already terminated for Basics and Gemini; if the run from the transformer to the tape is longer than that, the T24-BS-EX2 extension lead is ordered separately. WAC also builds this same supply in a 60W size, so size the transformer to the total tape wattage on the run.
2) Will the EN-BT96 transformer dim, and what kind of dimmer do I put on it?
It dims, and the dimmer goes on the line voltage side, never between the transformer and the tape. The EN-BT96 accepts ELV, TRIAC, and 0-10V control, and its minimum load is 1W, which is what lets a short LED tape run dim smoothly instead of dropping out or flickering the way a transformer with a high minimum load would. For a retrofit where the existing wall box already has an incandescent-style TRIAC dimmer, that dimmer will work on the primary.
3) Can I run the low voltage wiring from this WAC transformer inside a wall without conduit?
Yes. The EN-BT96 is a Class 2 transformer, and Class 2 secondary wiring does not require conduit, sheathed cable, or clamp wiring techniques. Non-metallic sheathed cable is acceptable for the secondary run in walls and ceilings. WAC calls for 14 to 18 gauge stranded or solid wire on the secondary, sold separately. The line voltage side is different: the enclosure has knockouts with clips for the 120V feed and that side is wired as normal line voltage.
4) Can the EN-BT96 power supply be mounted in a bathroom or a covered exterior soffit?
Damp locations only. The EN-BT96 is UL and cUL Listed for damp locations and rated IP20, so a bathroom ceiling or a covered soffit that never sees direct water is within its rating. IP20 means no water protection at all, so anywhere that gets sprayed, splashed, or rained on is out, and so is any wet location. It is an indoor product by rating.
5) Does this WAC power supply meet Title 24 for a California job?
It does. The EN-BT96 is CEC listed and Title 24 compliant, and it is also ADA compliant and Energy Star. For a California permit set or an institutional spec that calls out Title 24 registration, that is the box checked at the transformer.
6) How much space do I need to leave for the EN-BT96 in a cabinet or above a ceiling?
The enclosure measures 6.5 x 1.63 x 1.25 inches, so it fits in a shallow cavity, a cabinet toe kick, or above an accessible ceiling tile. The housing is aluminum and the cover comes off easily for wiring, so leave working clearance at the cover face and at the knockouts, not just the body footprint. Add room for the 72 inch factory lead as well.
7) Should I use the 96W transformer or the 60W one for my tape light run?
Size it to the connected load. WAC builds this remote supply in 60W and 96W; the EN-BT96 is the 96W version, so it carries the longer or higher output tape runs, and the 60W covers shorter runs like a single cabinet or a short cove. Being a Class 2 unit, no compartment draws more than 5 amps, and a job that needs more than 96W is split across multiple transformers rather than run off one. Both share the 1W minimum load, so neither one is too big to dim a short LED run.
8) What else do I have to order besides the EN-BT96 to finish a tape light install?
The transformer includes the 72 inch Basics and Gemini lead and nothing else. The tape light itself is separate, no lamps or bulbs are included, and the secondary low voltage wire is separate as well, 14 to 18 gauge stranded or solid. If the transformer sits farther than 72 inches from the start of the tape, add the T24-BS-EX2 longer lead wire. The dimmer, if the run is dimmed, is a separate line voltage ELV, TRIAC, or 0-10V device on the primary.
9) Is the EN-BT96 remote power supply protected against a short or an overload on the tape run?
It has soft start, short circuit, and overload protection built in, which matters on a cove or cabinet install where a pinched tape lead can short after the trim goes on. The Class 2 construction backs that up by limiting each compartment to 5 amps of draw. Soft start also keeps the inrush down at switch-on, which is what protects the dimmer on the primary side.
10) What finish does the WAC EN-BT96 transformer housing come in?
Black, and it is the only finish the EN-BT96 is built in, ordered as EN-BT96-24. The housing is aluminum. Since this is a remote power supply that lives above a ceiling, in a cabinet, or in a cove, the finish is not a visible design choice on most installs.
