WAC Lighting FM-W47203-30-BK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC Lighting FM-W472 Downtown flush mount be used outdoors on an uncovered ceiling or exposed wall?
The FM-W472 Downtown flush mount is rated for wet locations and ETL and cETL listed, so it can go outdoors where it takes direct rain, not just under a covered soffit. It mounts to either a ceiling or a wall, and the same fixture is fine indoors, which is useful when you want one part number across a porch ceiling, an atrium, and an exterior wall.
2) Does the FM-W472 need a remote LED driver or transformer in the ceiling?
No remote driver or transformer. The Downtown FM-W472 uses WAC's ACLED module running directly on 120V line voltage, which is why it can sit on a standard pancake junction box with no space needed for driver gear. That matters on retrofits where the existing box is shallow or there is no plenum room above a covered porch ceiling.
3) How do I set the color temperature on the WAC Downtown 3-CCT outdoor flush mount?
There's an onboard switch on the fixture that selects 3000K warm white, 3500K neutral, or 4000K cool white. You set it at install, so a property manager stocking one SKU can match 3000K on residential entries and 4000K on a parking structure ceiling without ordering different fixtures. Light output is up to 863 lumens at 90 CRI.
4) Will the FM-W472 dim on my existing wall dimmer?
It dims on electronic low voltage (ELV) or TRIAC dimmers. A standard incandescent/MLV dimmer is not the right control for it, so if the existing switch leg is on an old magnetic low voltage or leading-edge incandescent dimmer, plan on swapping to an ELV or TRIAC-rated LED dimmer to get continuous flicker-free dimming.
5) Is this WAC outdoor flush mount ADA compliant for a corridor or exterior walkway wall?
Yes, the Downtown FM-W472 is listed as ADA compliant, which is what lets it be surface mounted on a wall along an egress path or corridor without violating protrusion limits. It is also CEC and California Title 24 compliant, which institutional and multi-family specifiers in California will need.
6) Is the WAC FM-W472 Downtown fixture durable enough for a coastal or high-traffic commercial exterior?
The body is aluminum with a regressed lens for glare control, and the LED is rated at 54,000 hours average life. The lamp module is integral and included, so there is no relamping cycle to schedule, only fixture replacement at end of life. It is not Energy Star qualified, which matters only if a rebate program requires that listing.
7) Is 863 lumens enough for a covered porch or entryway ceiling?
For a residential covered porch, patio, or covered entry, 863 lumens from a single Downtown flush mount is a typical general-light level, and the beam is a flood distribution rather than a spot, so it spreads across the area instead of pooling. On a wider commercial soffit or atrium, lay out multiple units on spacing rather than relying on one.
8) What finishes and sizes does the WAC Downtown FM-W472 outdoor flush mount come in?
Two finishes, black and matte white, and both are offered across every color temperature setting ordered. Sizes are designated 3 and 3.5, and both sizes are available in black and in white at 3000K, 3500K, and 4000K, so finish does not limit your size choice.
9) Is there an installation guide for the WAC Downtown FM-W472?
Yes, WAC publishes an installation guide for the Downtown FM-W472, available at https://zensupply.com/content/pdf/wac-lighting/installation-guide-535e76.pdf. Worth pulling before rough-in since the fixture is hardwired to 120V and lands on a pancake box.
