Lotos – Fire Rated Downlight 5CCT

The wafer-thin Lotos LED Recessed Kit with remote driver combines high quality light output and efficiency while eliminating the need for a large housing. This innovative design can be installed easily as a remodel or new construction with an optional frame-in kit sold separately for pre-wiring. Lotos is available in a downlight version for general ambient lighting and an adjustable version with a gimbal that pivots 360 degrees on a hinge, perfect for slope ceilings, general lighting, accenting lighting, and wall washing. 1) Can the Lotos fire rated downlight go into a fire rated ceiling assembly?
Yes, that is the point of the -FWT version. The Lotos R4ERDR-W9CS-FWT is tested and certified to ASTM E119 and UL 263 for 2 hours, so it can go into a rated ceiling without a separate fire box or tenting. The non-fire-rated Lotos versions do not carry that rating, so if the drawing calls for a 2-hour assembly, the -FWT suffix is the part you order.
2) How much space above the ceiling do I need for the Lotos 4 inch fire rated downlight?
Plan on 4-1/2 inches of minimum plenum space for the fire rated Lotos. That is more than the 3 inches the standard Lotos platform gets by with, so if you are working a shallow bay or a tight joist cavity, measure before you commit to the fire rated version. The driver is remote, which is what keeps the ceiling-side depth down, and it is included with the kit.
3) Can I change the color temperature on the WAC Lotos fire rated downlight after it is installed?
It is a 5-CCT switchable fixture: 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K are all selectable on the same unit. For a property manager standardizing a building, that means one part number covers warm lobby areas and cooler back-of-house, and you can match an existing run without reordering. CRI is 90.
4) Will the Lotos fire rated downlight work on my 277V circuit?
Yes. Input is 120-277 VAC at 50/60Hz, so the same fixture runs on residential 120V and on 277V commercial lighting circuits. That universal input is what lets you spec one part across a mixed-voltage building instead of splitting the order.
5) What dimmer works with the WAC Lotos R4ERDR-W9CS-FWT?
The fire rated Lotos dims on both ELV and TRIAC controls, 100 percent down to 5 percent either way. Wire it to a forward or reverse phase dimmer rated for LED load and you get the full range. There is no 0-10V input on this one, so if the panel or the control system is 0-10V, this is the wrong fixture for that circuit.
6) Can I put the Lotos fire rated downlight in direct contact with insulation?
Yes, it is IC rated and airtight, so blown or batt insulation can sit against it and it will not leak conditioned air into the attic. Combined with the 2-hour fire rating, that covers the two things an inspector usually stops on in a rated insulated ceiling.
7) Do I need to cut open the ceiling to install the Lotos wafer downlight, or can it go in as a remodel?
It installs as a remodel through the aperture, no housing can required, because the driver is remote and the fixture itself is wafer thin. For new construction where you want to pre-wire before drywall, WAC offers a frame-in kit, sold separately. Either way the driver ships with the kit.
8) Should I use the Lotos downlight version or the adjustable gimbal version?
The downlight version, which is what R4ERDR-W9CS-FWT is, throws straight down for general ambient lighting on a flat ceiling. If you have a sloped ceiling, or you are accenting artwork or wall washing, the adjustable Lotos with the gimbal pivots 360 degrees on a hinge and is the one to order instead. Same platform, different optic behavior.
9) What finish and aperture size does the R4ERDR-W9CS-FWT come in?
This one is the 4 inch round aperture in white, and white is the only finish offered on it. The Lotos family itself spans round and square trims in 2 inch, 4 inch and 6 inch apertures, so if you need to match an existing aperture size across a building, the platform covers it, but the fire rated 2-hour build is the R4ERDR-W9CS-FWT configuration.
10) What is the Lotos fire rated downlight actually made of, and will it hold up in a commercial corridor?
Construction is steel with a translucent acrylic diffuser, not plastic housing, and the LED module is a multiple-LED array rather than a single emitter, which is what keeps the illumination even across the aperture instead of showing a hot spot. Rated life is 50,000 hours, so in a corridor running long hours it is a long interval between ladder trips.
