Modern Forms FR-W2601-56L-BN/SL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Modern Forms Smooth 5 FR-W2601 be installed on a covered patio or other outdoor location?
Yes. The Smooth 5 is Wet Location rated and carries UL, cUL, CSA, ETL and cETL listings, so it can go on covered patios and other exposed outdoor spaces as well as indoors. The blades are ABS rather than wood, which is why it holds up in damp and wet conditions.
2) Can the Smooth 5 ceiling fan be mounted on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?
Out of the box it handles slopes up to 30 degrees. For a steeper pitch, 32 to 45 degrees, you add the XF-SCK Slope Ceiling Kit. Anything beyond 45 degrees is outside the fan's mounting range.
3) Do I need to run a separate wire or add a wall control to operate this Modern Forms smart fan?
No extra wiring is needed. The Smooth 5 ships with a battery-operated Bluetooth remote and wall cradle (F-RCBT-WT), so a single hardwired 120V feed to the outlet box is enough. If you want a permanent wall station, the hardwired Bluetooth wall control F-WCBT-WT is sold separately, no wall control is included.
4) Can I use the Modern Forms Smooth 5 as a fan only, without the light?
Yes. The integrated LED luminaire is replaceable, and a light cap is included so you can run the fan with no light at all. With the luminaire in place you get 1606 lumens at 90 CRI, dimmable, with selectable 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 5000K color temperature and a flood distribution.
5) What finishes does the Modern Forms FR-W2601 Smooth 5 come in, and are the blades a different color?
Four finishes: Brushed Nickel Silver, Matte Black, Matte White, and Soft Brass Matte Black. The blade finish is listed as Silver. If you are standardizing several units across a building or a hospitality property, order the same finish code on every opening since the Soft Brass Matte Black is a two-tone and will not match a straight Matte Black.
6) Will this fan work with Alexa or Google Home, or does it need the manufacturer's app?
Both. The Smooth 5 pairs with the free Modern Forms app and also works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings, so it drops into an existing whole-home automation setup. Smart control is standard, not an add-on module.
7) Is the Smooth 5 ceiling fan ADA compliant or Energy Star rated?
Neither. The Smooth 5 is not ADA compliant and it is not Energy Star qualified. If your project specification requires an Energy Star fan, this one will not satisfy it, though it is UL, cUL, CSA, ETL and cETL listed for wet locations.
8) Does the FR-W2601 run in reverse for winter, and how many speeds does it have?
The DC motor is reversible and gives you 6 speeds, so you can run it forward for downdraft cooling in summer and reverse it to push warm air back down in winter. DC motors also draw substantially less power than AC at equivalent airflow, which matters if you are putting a dozen of these in a building.
9) What is the total power draw of the Modern Forms Smooth 5 for load calculations?
47W total wattage on a 120V circuit covers the integrated LED luminaire. That is the figure to use when you are adding fixtures to a branch circuit. The LED module is rated 50,000 average hours and is replaceable rather than a sealed assembly, so a burned-out module does not mean a new fan.
