Metallics QB12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the QB12 a spade bit or an auger bit, and will 6 inches reach through a doubled top plate?
It is a flat spade-type wood bit, not a self-feeding auger. At 6 inches overall length the usable flute depth is shorter than the shank total, so for boring through a doubled 2x top plate (3 inches of wood) it works, but for deeper stacked framing or boring at an angle from below, a longer auger bit or a bit extension is the better tool.
2) Is the QB12 meant for wood only, or can I bore through metal studs with it?
Wood only. It is a wood boring bit, so it is for studs, plates, joists and blocking. For metal studs or steel framing use a step bit or a hole saw rated for metal, not this bit.
3) How many Metallics QB12 bits come in a pack?
One bit per pack, supplied in a pouch. If you are stocking a crew or a service van, order a quantity per bit rather than expecting a multi-size set.
4) Can the QB12 wood bit be used in a standard cordless drill?
Yes. Flat wood bits like the QB12 have a hex shank intended for a drill chuck, and a 15/16 inch bore in softwood framing is within range of a corded drill or a mid to high torque cordless drill driver. Run it at low speed and high torque; spade bits grab when they break through.
