Watts 9431 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size and thread connections does the Watts 9431 pressure reducing valve use?
The Watts LF25AUB-Z3 valve, model 9431, is a 1-1/2 inch valve with 1-1/2 inch NPT female threads on both ends. The inlet is a union female threaded connection, which lets you break the valve out for service without cutting pipe; the outlet is a plain NPT female threaded connection. If your line is copper, you will need adapters to make up to NPT on both sides.
2) What pressure will the Watts 9431 valve come set at, and how far can I adjust it?
It ships set at 50 psi (3.4 bar) and adjusts over a range of 25 to 75 psi (1.7 to 5.2 bar). If your building needs a downstream pressure outside that window, this is not the valve for the job. Maximum working pressure on the inlet side is 300 psi (20.7 bar), so high street pressure is not a problem for the body.
3) Is this Watts pressure reducing valve lead free for potable water?
Yes. The body is a lead free copper silicon alloy, which is what Watts uses on its LF potable water line. The seat is stainless steel and the disc is EPDM.
4) Does the Watts 9431 handle thermal expansion from a water heater?
It has a built-in thermal expansion bypass. That relieves expansion pressure back through the valve toward the supply main when downstream pressure from a heating cycle exceeds inlet pressure, so you are not trapping pressure against a closed valve. It is not a substitute for a properly sized expansion tank where code or the heater manufacturer calls for one.
5) Does this Watts PRV come with a strainer, or do I need to install one upstream?
A stainless steel strainer is integral to the valve, so you do not need a separate inline strainer just to protect the seat. On dirty or older mains, leave enough clearance at the strainer cap to pull and clean it.
6) Does the Watts 0009431 include a pressure gauge?
No gauge is supplied with it. If the job or the inspector wants a reading at the valve, plan on a separate gauge teed into the downstream line, and set the valve to your target within its 25 to 75 psi range using that gauge.
7) Can I use this valve on a hot water line or a recirculation loop?
Temperature range is 33 F (0.5 C) up to 180 F (82 C), so domestic hot water and a recirc return are within rating. Do not use it on steam or anything that can freeze, since the 33 F floor means the valve is for liquid service only.
8) Does the Watts 9431 have any corrosion resistant coating for a wet vault or pit install?
No coating is applied. Corrosion resistance comes from the material itself, a lead free copper silicon alloy body with a stainless steel strainer. In a flooded pit or a chemically aggressive space, plan protection accordingly.
