Watts 9392 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe connections does the Watts 0009392 pressure reducing valve use, and do I need a union?
The Watts LF25AUB-Z3, model 9392, is 1-1/4 inch on both ends. The inlet is a union female NPT thread and the outlet is a plain female NPT thread. The union is built into the inlet side, so you can break the valve out of the line for service without cutting pipe. You will still need a way to disconnect the outlet, which is a fixed female NPT connection.
2) Do I still need a separate thermal expansion tank with this Watts PRV?
This valve has a built in thermal expansion bypass, so pressure built up downstream by a water heater can relieve back through the valve instead of being trapped. That is the difference between this model and a plain non-bypass PRV, which closes tight and forces you to handle expansion separately. Whether an expansion tank is still required is a local code call on your system, but the bypass feature is present on the valve.
3) Is the Watts 0009392 lead free for potable water?
The body is a lead free copper silicon alloy, which is what makes it suitable for potable domestic water in both commercial and residential service. The seal disc is EPDM and the strainer is stainless steel.
4) Can I use this valve on a domestic hot water line, or is it cold water only?
Temperature range runs from 33 degrees F up to 180 degrees F (0.5 to 82 C), so it handles hot water service as well as cold. Maximum working pressure is 300 psi (20.7 bar) on the inlet side, which covers high municipal or booster-fed supply.
5) Does this pressure reducing valve come with a strainer, or do I have to pipe one in ahead of it?
An integral stainless steel strainer is built into the valve, so you do not need a separate Y strainer upstream to protect the seat. Leave clearance at the strainer cap so it can be pulled and cleaned in place.
6) Will this replace an existing 1-1/4 inch threaded Watts PRV in a multi-family riser?
If the existing valve is 1-1/4 inch NPT female on both ends, the LF25AUB-Z3 drops into the same take out only if the union nut on the inlet matches your existing union tailpiece. Inlet is union female NPT, outlet is straight female NPT, both 1-1/4 inch. Carry a fresh tailpiece and union nut for the inlet rather than reusing an old one, and confirm the line you are feeding never needs more than 75 psi, since that is the top of this valve's adjustment.
7) Does the Watts 9392 include a pressure gauge?
No gauge is supplied with this model. If you want to verify or trim the downstream setting, plan on a gauge on the outlet piping or a hose bibb gauge at a fixture. The valve ships set at 50 psi.
