Metallics JFMP72 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-24 machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or device ear?
Yes. The Metallics JFMP72 is a 10-24 UNC coarse thread screw, 24 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the thread used in outlet box and device mounting holes. The 1 inch length gives you enough reach for a device screwed through a plaster ring or a mud ring stack.
2) Will the flat head sit flush in a countersunk hole?
That is what a flat head is for. The head on the JFMP72 measures 0.333 to 0.362 in. across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 in., dimensioned to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so it seats flush in a standard 82 degree countersink of that diameter. If your hole is not countersunk, the head will stand proud and you want a pan or round head instead.
3) Are zinc plated steel machine screws OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a mild corrosion finish meant for dry indoor and enclosure work. The JFMP72 is zinc over AISI 1006-1022 steel, which will eventually rust in wet, washdown, or coastal exposure. For those openings specify a stainless machine screw in the same 10-24 x 1 in. size.
4) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFMP72 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing language, these will not qualify.
5) What screwdriver or bit do I need for these Metallics flat head Phillips screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.198 in. in diameter and 0.124 in. deep, so a #1 bit will cam out and a #3 will not seat.
6) How many screws come in a pack of JFMP72?
They ship 100 to a jar, and 100 is the order minimum. Buying by the jar is the normal way these move for electrical and plumbing service work rather than loose counts.
7) How much load will a 10-24 x 1 in. steel machine screw hold?
Rated at 1050 lb minimum tensile, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is ample for devices, covers, brackets, and strut hardware; it is not a structural anchor rating, and the real limit is usually the threads in whatever you are screwing into.
8) Is a machine screw the right choice, or do I need a sheet metal or self-tapping screw?
A machine screw has a uniform straight thread and no point, so it needs an existing tapped hole or a nut. The JFMP72 is 10-24 UNC for exactly that. If you are driving into unthreaded sheet metal or a pilot hole you drilled yourself, you want a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
9) How much does a jar of these weigh for shipping or stocking a van?
A 100 count jar runs 0.76 lbs, with the container about 3 x 3 x 2.15 in. Small enough to keep several thread sizes on the truck without eating a shelf.
