Metallics JFMP70 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-24 machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or device bracket?
Yes. The Metallics JFMP70 is a 10-24 UNC screw, 24 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the thread used on outlet box and device mounting holes. At 1/2 inch long it suits box ears, plaster rings and bracket work where you only have a short thread engagement.
2) Will the flat head sit flush in a countersunk hole?
That is what a flat head is for, and the numbers let you check your countersink. The head measures 0.333 to 0.362 inch across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 inch, so an 82 degree countersink sized for a #10 flat head takes it flush.
3) Are these screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JFMP70 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, these will not satisfy it.
4) What size Phillips driver do I need for these 10-24 screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.198 inch in diameter and 0.124 inch deep, so a #2 bit seats fully. Using a #1 will cam out and chew the recess.
5) How many 10-24 x 1/2 flat head Phillips screws come in a jar?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. Metallics lists the FM and FMP series in other sizes and quantities by request.
6) Are zinc plated steel machine screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
Zinc plated steel is a dry, indoor-duty finish. The JFMP70 is steel with a zinc plating, which handles electrical, plumbing and HVAC interior work but will corrode in wet or exterior exposure. For those openings use a stainless machine screw in the same 10-24 x 1/2 size.
7) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
They are made to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for the head and drive dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the thread, which is what a spec sheet or submittal normally calls out for flat head machine screws.
8) Is a 1/2 inch screw long enough, or should I go longer?
At 1/2 inch of total length under a flat head, the usable grip is the full 1/2 inch since the head countersinks into the material. That is enough for sheet metal boxes, device straps and thin brackets. Stacking a plaster ring plus a bracket will usually want a longer screw, and the FM and FMP series is offered in other lengths by request.
