Metallics JPMP69 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional spec so they interchange with what is already in my panels?
Yes. The JPMP69 is built to ASME B18.6.3-2010, the dimensional standard for inch-series machine screws, so the head, thread and recess geometry interchange with any other 10-32 pan head Phillips made to that standard. That matters if you are standardizing a facility and want one screw that drops into existing hardware across buildings.
2) Can I use the Metallics JPMP69 on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. Metallics lists the JPMP69 as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, you need a domestically produced machine screw instead.
3) What size Phillips bit do I need for these Metallics machine screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess diameter is 0.192 inch with a gaging depth of 0.089 to 0.113 inch, so a #2 driver seats fully. A #1 will cam out and chew the recess; a #3 won't bottom in it.
4) Is zinc plated steel good enough for damp locations, or should I use stainless?
Zinc plated steel, which the JPMP69 uses, is a dry-location and protected-interior fastener. The plating resists handling corrosion and ordinary indoor humidity, but in wet locations, outdoors, coastal air, or anywhere with washdown or chemical exposure, go stainless instead. Keep in mind stainless machine screws have no single tensile performance standard, so published strength figures for them are approximations.
5) How strong are these screws, and can I use them to hang a light fixture or strut-mounted equipment?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. That is standard low-carbon commercial machine screw strength, fine for devices, covers, fixture straps, fixture canopies and light bracketry. For structural or high-load anchoring, specify a graded bolt rather than a machine screw.
6) Should I pick a pan head or a flat head machine screw for mounting devices in a box?
Pan head, like the JPMP69, is the default for electrical device and cover mounting: it seats on the surface of the hole and needs no countersink, and at 0.122 to 0.133 inch tall it stays low enough to clear plates and panel doors. Use a flat head only where the hole is actually countersunk and the fastener has to finish flush with the surface.
7) How do these Metallics screws come packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. Shop weight of the jar is 1.05 lbs. Metallics does offer other sizes and quantities of the PMP pan head Phillips machine screws by request, so if you need a different length or diameter in the same configuration, ask.
