1) What pipe size and thread does the Watts 87SI 3/4 inch Y-strainer connect to?
Both ends are 3/4 inch (20 mm) female NPT threads, so it threads straight onto 3/4 inch NPT male pipe nipples or adapters at inlet and outlet. No flanges or grooved couplings are involved on this one, so you need two male-threaded ends and a union or two if you ever want to pull it out without cutting the line.
2) What pressure and temperature can this stainless Y-strainer handle?
Rated Class 300: 300 PSI (27.0 BAR) maximum, 300 PSI WSP for steam service, and 720 PSI WOG for water, oil and gas. Temperature range runs from 32 degrees F up to 212 degrees F. That covers hot and cold domestic water, chilled water and low pressure steam lines within those limits.
3) Can I add a blowdown valve to this Watts strainer without pulling the cap?
Yes. The retainer cover is tapped with a closure plug installed, and the blowdown port is 3/8 inch (10 mm) female threaded. Pull the plug and thread in a 3/8 inch NPT ball valve or blowdown valve so the line can be flushed under pressure instead of shutting down and opening the cap.
4) Can I use this Watts strainer on a fire protection line?
No. The 87SI stainless wye strainer is not UL approved for fireline service. For sprinkler or standpipe work you need a strainer specifically listed for fire protection service. Use this one on process, potable, chilled water, steam and mechanical equipment protection instead.
5) How fine is the screen, and what will an 80 mesh element actually catch?
The element is an 80 mesh stainless steel screen. That is a fine mesh, suited to protecting solenoid valves, control valves, meters, pumps and small orifices from scale, sand and pipe debris. On a dirty or newly installed line it will load up faster than a coarser perforated basket, so plan on blowing it down or pulling it early after startup.
6) Is this strainer stainless all the way through, or just the screen?
Body is cast stainless steel, the retainer cover is stainless, and the screen is stainless. The cover gasket is PTFE. Nothing is epoxy coated because the base metal does the corrosion work itself. That makes it a fit for deionized water, chemical feed, food service and coastal or wash-down areas where a bronze or iron Y-strainer would corrode or leach.
7) Does the orientation matter when installing a wye pattern strainer?
It does. A wye body hangs the screen pocket off at an angle, so it has to be installed with the flow arrow correct and with the pocket pointing down on horizontal pipe, or to the side if there is no clearance below. On vertical pipe, flow must be downward for the pocket to collect. Leave room at the cap end to withdraw the 80 mesh screen for cleaning.
