Watts 3/4 87SI-T-80 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and type of pipe connection does the Watts 87SI-T-80 Y-strainer use?
Both ends are 3/4 inch female NPT threaded, inlet and outlet alike (3/4 inch is 20 mm metric). So it threads directly onto 3/4 inch male NPT nipples or adapters. There is no flange or grooved coupling on this one, so if your line is flanged or grooved you need a different body style or a set of threaded adapters.
2) Can this stainless Watts Y-strainer be used on potable water lines?
It is a lead free cast stainless steel strainer, so it suits potable water service. The screen is stainless as well and the gasket is PTFE, both of which hold up on domestic water without imparting taste or corroding the way a plated steel screen can.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Watts 87SI strainer handle?
Class 300 body, rated 300 psi (27 bar) at temperature, with a 720 psi WOG rating for cold non-shock water, oil and gas service. Operating temperature range runs 32 F to 212 F (0 C to 100 C), so it covers domestic hot water and low pressure hydronic loops but not steam above 212 F.
4) Can I add a blowdown valve to clean this strainer without taking it apart?
Yes. The retainer cover is tapped with a closure plug installed, giving a 3/8 inch female threaded blowdown outlet. Pull the plug and thread in a 3/8 inch NPT ball valve and you can flush the screen under line pressure instead of shutting down and removing the cap. Leave the plug in if you would rather service it by hand.
5) How fine is the 80 mesh screen, and what is it good at catching?
80 mesh stainless screen is a fine filtration level, roughly 80 openings per linear inch. It catches sand, scale flakes, weld slag and pipe debris ahead of control valves, solenoid valves, meters and pump seals. On dirty or high solids lines a coarser screen loads up less often, so if you are straining a well line or a flushed new main expect frequent blowdown with 80 mesh.
6) Does a wye strainer have to be installed a particular way?
Wye pattern means the screen pocket sits at an angle off the run. Install it with the pocket pointing down on horizontal lines so debris collects in the pocket rather than falling back into the flow, and on vertical lines run flow downward. Flow direction has to follow the body arrow, since the screen is only supported from the inlet side.
7) Is the Watts 87SI-T-80 Buy American Act compliant for a government job?
No. The 87SI-T-80 is not Buy American Act compliant, so it will not satisfy a BAA or Buy America clause on a federal or federally funded project. For those specs you need a domestically produced strainer.
8) What is the Watts part number for the 3/4 inch 87SI strainer with the 80 mesh screen?
Order it as 3/4 87SI-T-80, Watts part number 88003074. The T in the model designates the tapped retainer cap with closure plug and the 80 is the screen mesh.
9) Is there an epoxy coating or bolted cover on this strainer?
Neither. The 87SI has no epoxy coating, relying on the cast stainless body for corrosion resistance, and the screen retainer is a threaded cover rather than a bolted flange, so there is no bolt or flange hardware to source at service time. You only need a wrench and a replacement PTFE gasket if the seal is worn.
