Red Dot ALL-9 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the LL designation on the Red Dot ALL-9 conduit body mean, and which way does the opening face?
LL is a back-outlet-free, single-side body: the conduit runs straight through and the removable cover opening is on the left side as you look at the body with the conduit hubs running vertically. It is a Series A style body for rigid and IMC conduit. If you need the opening on the right, you want the LR version instead; if you need it on the back, that is an LB.
2) Will the Red Dot ALL-9 thread onto 3-1/2 inch rigid steel conduit?
Yes. The ALL-9 is a 3-1/2 inch body with threaded hubs for rigid metal conduit, and it also takes 3-1/2 inch IMC since IMC uses the same NPT thread as rigid. It will not work with EMT, which is unthreaded.
3) Is the ALL-9 conduit body aluminum or iron, and can I use it on a run of galvanized rigid steel conduit?
The ALL-9 body is die cast aluminum. It threads onto galvanized rigid steel conduit without issue, but on a wet or corrosive exterior run keep in mind you are joining dissimilar metals, so an iron/malleable body is the usual choice where the whole system is steel. Aluminum is normally specified where the conduit itself is aluminum or where weight matters.
4) I have a 3-1/2 inch conduit run that has to turn at a wall. Is an LL body the right fitting, or should I use a sweep elbow?
Use the LL body when you need a turn plus access for pulling; the removable cover gives you a hand into the raceway, which matters a lot on 3-1/2 inch conductors. Use a factory sweep or field bend instead when the conductors are large enough that the bending radius inside a conduit body would damage insulation, since conduit bodies are not rated as pulling elbows for every conductor size. For a straight-through turn with no pull access needed, an elbow is the cleaner choice.
5) What is the Red Dot part number I should put on the purchase order for a 3-1/2 inch aluminum LL body?
Red Dot ALL-9. That is the manufacturer part number for the 3-1/2 inch rigid/IMC aluminum LL conduit body, and it is the only configuration offered under that number.
