Metallics JFM72 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/8-16 flat head machine screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
Yes, that is what the flat head is for. The Metallics JFM72 has a flat head measuring 0.67 to 0.717 in. across and 0.2 to 0.23 in. high, so it seats flush in an 82 degree countersink of that diameter. If your plate or box is not countersunk, the head will stand proud and you want a pan or round head instead.
2) Is the 3/8-16 thread on the JFM72 coarse or fine, and will it match a standard 3/8 coarse nut?
Coarse. The thread is UNC at 16 threads per inch, made to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so it mates with any standard 3/8-16 nut, tapped hole, or strut nut. If the hole you are threading into is 3/8-24 fine, this screw will not start.
3) Do these screws qualify for Buy American or ARRA funded projects?
No. The JFM72 is multi-country origin and is flagged as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, so it cannot be used where a federal or federally funded job requires domestic fasteners.
4) How many 3/8-16 x 1-1/4 in. machine screws come in a jar, and can I buy just a few?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. There is no smaller break, so plan on the full jar per order.
5) Are zinc plated steel machine screws suitable for outdoor or wet locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which handles dry indoor electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so for wet, washdown, or exterior exposure specify a stainless machine screw of the same 3/8-16 x 1-1/4 in. size instead.
6) What is the tensile strength and hardness of the Metallics JFM72 screw?
4,650 lb minimum tensile, with hardness in the Rockwell B70 to B100 range, from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. That is plenty for mounting boxes, straps, panels, and enclosure hardware, but it is not a graded structural bolt, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 fastener.
7) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
Yes. The JFM72 flat head slotted machine screw is made to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for head and body dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the thread, which is what an inspector or submittal reviewer looks for on a slotted machine screw.
8) What screwdriver do I need, and can I run these with a drill?
Slotted drive, with a slot 0.081 to 0.094 in. wide and 0.07 to 0.106 in. deep. Use a flat blade tip that fills that slot. A slotted head has no self-centering, so these are hand or low speed work; if you want to drive a hundred of them with an impact, pick a Phillips head machine screw instead.
9) How much does a jar of 100 of these 3/8-16 screws weigh for shipping?
About 3.792 lbs for the jar of 100. Handy if you are palletizing a stock order of several jars for a shop or maintenance crib.
