Metallics JFM78 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/8-16 machine screw thread into a standard 3/8 inch coarse tapped hole or nut?
Yes. The Metallics JFM78 machine screw is a 3/8-16 UNC thread cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, 16 threads per inch, so it mates with any standard 3/8-16 coarse tapped hole, nut, or strut channel nut. It will not run into a 3/8-24 fine thread.
2) How big is the head on the JFM78 flat head screw, and will it sit flush?
The flat head measures 0.67 to 0.717 inches across and 0.2 to 0.23 inches in head height. Flat head means it is countersunk, so it sits flush only in a hole with an 82 degree countersink matched to that head diameter. Drop it into a plain drilled hole and the head will stand proud.
3) Can I use the JFM78 machine screw on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. The JFM78 is marked not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced 3/8-16 machine screw instead.
4) Are these flat head machine screws OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Material is zinc plated steel with a zinc finish, which is a dry-location corrosion coating. It handles indoor electrical, plumbing and HVAC work fine, but zinc plating will rust in standing moisture, washdown, or coastal exposure. For wet or corrosive locations use a stainless machine screw of the same 3/8-16 x 1-1/2 in. size instead.
5) Do these machine screws come loose or in a pack, and what is the minimum order?
The JFM78 ships in a jar, with a minimum order of 100 per jar. These are not sold as individual loose pieces, so plan on the full jar for the job.
6) Do these screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
Head, slot and thread dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 for slotted flat head machine screws, with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1 and steel to AISI 1006 to 1022. That is the set of standards to cite on a submittal for the Metallics FM and FMP series.
7) What kind of work are these 3/8-16 x 1-1/2 in. flat head screws meant for?
Metallics lists the field application as the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. Typical use is fastening boxes, covers, enclosures, channel and bracketry where a countersunk head has to finish flush and a slotted driver is what is on the belt. At 1-1/2 inches of length under the head, there is room to pass through a plate plus a spacer and still pick up several threads.
