1) What wire sizes will the 3M ITCSN-0400 heat shrink sleeve cover?
The ITCSN-0400 sleeve covers 12 to 6 AWG cable. It goes on at a 0.40 inch expanded inner diameter and recovers down to 0.15 inch, a 3:1 shrink, so it grips tight over the conductor and the splice body across that range. If your cable is larger than 6 AWG, step up to a bigger ITCSN size rather than forcing this one.
2) Can this 3M heat shrink sleeve be direct buried or used in a wet pit?
Yes. The ITCSN-0400 is rated for direct bury, and the adhesive lining is what makes that work: it melts during shrinking and seals the ends against moisture wicking. It's used for insulating secondary splices, direct-buried, submersible and dig-in repairs, and for physical protection of air-insulated connectors and lugs. 3) What temperature does this 3M sleeve need to shrink, and can I use a torch?
Minimum shrink temperature is 250 F (121 C). A propane torch with a soft flame or an electric heat gun both get there; keep the flame moving and work from the center out so the adhesive flows and pushes air out both ends. In service the sleeve holds from -67 F to 230 F (-55 C to 100 C). One thing to know before you pick a heat source: this is a non-flame-retardant polyolefin, so it will support combustion if you park a flame on it.
4) Is the 3M ITCSN-0400 flame retardant? I need it for an indoor cable tray.
No. The ITCSN-0400 is a non-flame-retardant cross-linked polyolefin. If your specification calls for a flame-retardant sleeve in a plenum, tray, or other indoor run where fire propagation matters, this is the wrong part. It is built for the environmental side of the job: abrasion, corrosion, chemicals, and direct burial.
5) Is the Burndy YS6C Hylink splice an alternative to the 3M ITCSN-0400 heat shrink sleeve?
They do different jobs and are commonly used together rather than one in place of the other. The 3M ITCSN-0400 is a heat shrink splice sleeve - an adhesive-lined, heavy wall polyolefin tube, 6 in long, that goes over a completed connection for insulation and sealing. The Burndy YS6C is a Hylink long barrel copper compression splice, which is the metallic connector that mechanically joins the two conductors. A compression splice makes the electrical joint; the ITCSN-0400 covers it. If you need the conductors physically joined, you need a compression connector such as the YS6C; if the joint is already made and you need it insulated and moisture sealed, the ITCSN-0400 is the part.
6) How long is each sleeve, and how many come in a case?
Each ITCSN-0400 sleeve is 6 inches long (152.4 mm), and they ship 25 to a case, boxed. Six inches gives you enough length to cover a barrel connector plus a couple of inches of overlap onto the jacket at each end, which is what you want for the adhesive to seal against.
7) What is the difference between heavy wall and thin wall heat shrink for an underground repair?
Wall thickness is the whole point underground. The ITCSN-0400 is heavy wall, which means more material left after recovery for mechanical protection against rock, backfill and dig-in damage, plus it carries the adhesive liner that seals the ends. Thin wall tubing is fine for strain relief and marking on a dry indoor run, but it will not take abrasion in a trench.
