3M 7000132151 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can this 3M sleeve be direct buried or used in a wet vault?
Yes. The ITCSN-0400 is rated for direct burial, and the adhesive lining is what makes that work: the lining melts and flows during shrink to seal the ends against moisture ingress. 3M lists it for direct-buried, submersible and dig-in repairs as well as insulating secondary splices. It is also non-corrosive and chemical resistant.
2) Is this 3M sleeve flame retardant? I need it for an occupied building plenum.
No. The ITCSN-0400 is a non-flame-retardant cross-linked polyolefin sleeve. If your specification calls for a flame retardant jacket over the splice, this is not the part, and you should select a flame-retardant heat shrink tubing instead. It is UL Listed, CSA Certified and RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant without exemption.
3) Is the 3M ITCSN-0400 a connector or just insulation over one?
It is insulation and sealing only, not a mechanical connection. You still need a crimp or compression connector to join the conductors, then the sleeve goes over it. A copper compression splice such as the Burndy YS6C Hylink long barrel splice is the type of connector that goes underneath; the 3M heavy-wall sleeve then covers and seals it.
4) For a direct-buried secondary splice, do I need the 3M ITCSN-0400 sleeve in addition to a Burndy YS6C connector?
The sealing comes from the sleeve, not the connector. The Burndy YS6C Hylink is a copper compression splice and provides the conductor joint only. The 3M ITCSN-0400 heavy wall sleeve is adhesive-lined and rated for direct bury, giving you the moisture seal and mechanical protection a buried or submersible repair needs, with 600 V per UL 486D, a -67 to 230 F service range and chemical and corrosion resistance. If the splice goes in the ground, plan on the sleeve over the crimp.
5) How hot does a heat gun need to get to shrink the 3M ITCSN-0400 sleeve?
Minimum shrink temperature is 250 F (121 C), so a standard electrical heat gun or a propane torch with a flame spreader will recover it. Work the heat around the circumference from the center out so the adhesive flows and pushes air out both ends. Once installed, the sleeve runs continuously from -67 F to 230 F (-55 C to 100 C).
6) How long is each sleeve and how many come in a case?
Each piece is 6 in (152.4 mm) long, black, and cases are 100 pieces. Lay the 6 inches against your splice before ordering: with a long-barrel compression connector you want adhesive-sealed overlap onto sound insulation at both ends, so a long barrel on 6 AWG can leave very little margin.
7) Why choose heavy-wall over thin-wall heat shrink for an underground repair?
Heavy-wall tubing gives you a thicker, tougher jacket over the splice, which is what stands up to backfill abrasion, rock, and shovel strikes on a dig-in repair. The ITCSN-0400 is a heavy-wall, adhesive-lined construction with 2400 psi tensile strength, split resistant and fast shrinking. Thin-wall tubing is fine for strain relief and marking on a panel, but it is not what you bury.
8) Can I use the ITCSN-0400 where a flame retardant sleeve is specified?
No. The ITCSN-0400 is classed non-flame retardant, so it should not be used where the drawing calls for a flame retardant tubing. What it does bring is a 3:1 shrink heavy wall cross-linked polyolefin body with 500 V/mil dielectric strength, 2400 psi tensile strength, a 121 C minimum shrink temperature and RoHS 2011/65/EU compliance without exemption - suited to insulating secondary splices and buried or submersible repairs rather than fire-rated assemblies.
9) My cable is larger than 6 AWG - what do I use instead of the ITCSN-0400?
The ITCSN-0400 covers 12-6 AWG with a 0.40 in expanded I.D. shrinking to 0.15 in, so it will not pass a larger conductor or connector barrel. The ITCSN family continues in larger sizes - 0800, 1100, 1500 and 2000 are all covered by the same UL 486D 600 V rating, with 3000 also CSA certified - so step up to the ITCSN size whose expanded I.D. clears your crimped connector.
