1) What cable sizes will the 3M ITCSN-0400 heat shrink sleeve fit?
The ITCSN-0400 covers 12-6 AWG cable. It goes on at a 0.4 inch (10.2 mm) inside diameter and recovers down to 0.15 inch (3.8 mm), so the connector or splice you slide it over has to be under 0.4 inch across and the cable itself needs to be at least 0.15 inch so the tubing grips it. Shrink ratio is 3:1.
2) Can this 3M heat shrink sleeve be direct buried or used in a wet vault?
Yes. The ITCSN-0400 is rated for direct burial, and the adhesive lining is what makes that work: as the tubing recovers, the adhesive flows and seals the ends against moisture wicking into the splice. 3M lists it for direct-buried, submersible and dig-in repairs. The polyolefin wall is non-corrosive to the conductor as well.
3) What voltage can the ITCSN-0400 insulated sleeve be used on?
It carries a 1 kV maximum voltage rating, and 3M lists the ITCSN-0400 under UL 486D at 600 V. Dielectric strength is 500 V/mil. It is used for insulating secondary splices and for physical protection of high voltage air-insulated connectors or lugs, not as primary insulation on a medium-voltage cable.
4) Is this heat shrink tubing flame retardant?
No. The ITCSN-0400 is classed non-flame-retardant. If your specification calls for a flame retardant sleeve for a plenum, riser or interior panel application, this is not the right part, look for a flame-retardant rated heat shrink instead. Where it is intended to go is underground and outdoor splice work, where burial sealing and abrasion resistance matter more.
5) What temperature does this 3M sleeve need to shrink, and can I do it with a heat gun?
Minimum shrink temperature is 250 degrees F (121 degrees C), which any standard electrical heat gun reaches. Work the heat evenly around the sleeve from the center outward so the adhesive flows and pushes air out the ends. Once installed it runs continuously from -67 to 230 degrees F (-55 to 100 degrees C).
6) How long is each piece and how many come in a pack?
Each piece is 6 inches long (152.4 mm), packed 3 pieces per pack, with 12 packs to a case. The 6 inch length is the constraint to check first: your splice plus enough overlap onto the jacket on both sides has to sit inside that, otherwise you are butting two sleeves together on one joint.
7) Is heavy-wall adhesive-lined tubing the right choice, or should I use thin-wall non-adhesive?
Go heavy-wall adhesive-lined like the ITCSN-0400 when the splice is exposed to moisture, soil, abrasion or chemicals, the adhesive seals and the thick polyolefin wall takes mechanical abuse. Thin-wall non-adhesive tubing is for dry indoor strain relief and color coding where sealing is not required. 3M does offer non-adhesive versions of this family if you only need the jacket.
8) Does the 3M ITCSN-0400 sleeve carry UL and CSA approvals, and is it RoHS compliant?
It is UL Listed and CSA Certified, with the ITCSN 0400 named specifically in 3M's UL 486D 600 V listing and in the CSA certification. It is also RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant without exemption. Made in the United States.
9) Will this sleeve hold up to pulling and ground movement after it is buried?
Tensile strength of the polyolefin is 2400 psi, and the material is split resistant, so the recovered sleeve resists tearing where the cable flexes at the splice exit. Combined with the adhesive bond to the jacket, that is what keeps a buried or dig-in repair sealed rather than working open.
