1) What cable sizes does the 3M ITCSN-0800 heat shrink sleeve fit?
The ITCSN-0800 covers 8 AWG through 1/0 AWG cable. It goes on at a 0.8 in (20.3 mm) expanded inner diameter and recovers down to 0.2 in (5.1 mm), a 3:1 shrink ratio, so it grips the full range from a small 8 AWG conductor up to a 1/0 splice body. If your splice is larger than 1/0, step up to the next ITCSN size rather than forcing this one.
2) Can 3M ITCSN-0800 heat shrink be direct buried or used in a wet vault?
Yes. The ITCSN-0800 is rated for direct burial, and the adhesive lining is what makes that work: as the tubing recovers, the adhesive flows and seals the cable jacket so moisture can't track into the splice. 3M lists it for direct-buried, submersible, and dig-in repairs. It is also non-corrosive, so it won't attack the conductor or connector over time.
3) Is 3M ITCSN-0800 heat shrink flame retardant?
No. The ITCSN-0800 is classed non-flame retardant. If your spec or facility code calls for a flame retardant sleeve in a plenum, riser, or interior cable tray run, this is the wrong part and you need a flame retardant tubing instead. It is fine for buried, below-grade, and enclosed splice work where that requirement doesn't apply.
4) How hot does a torch or heat gun need to get to shrink 3M ITCSN tubing?
Minimum shrink temperature is 250 F (121 C). Any standard electrical heat gun or a soft propane flame will get there. Work the heat evenly around the circumference and move from the center outward so the adhesive pushes air out the ends; you know it's done when adhesive beads out at both ends of the 6 in sleeve.
5) Will this 3M sleeve hold up outdoors in freezing winters and hot equipment rooms?
The service range is -67 F to 230 F (-55 C to 110 C max), which covers outdoor pedestals, rooftops, and hot switchgear rooms. The cross-linked polyolefin wall is heavy wall rather than thin wall, so it also takes abrasion, corrosion, and chemical exposure in a duct or handhole.
6) Can I use this heat shrink sleeve over a lug or a bolted connector instead of a splice?
Yes, within the size range. 3M lists the ITCSN sleeves for physical protection of high voltage air-insulated connectors or lugs as well as for insulating secondary splices.
