B-LINE 1355R-6503 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the B-Line 1355R-6503 photoelectric sensor need a separate reflector or receiver?
No. The 1355R-6503 is a diffuse reflective sensor, so the emitter and receiver are in the one body and it senses light bounced straight back off the target. No retroreflector and no opposed receiver to mount and align. Sensing range for this mode is rated against a 90 percent reflectance card, so dark, matte or angled targets will detect at shorter distances than a light flat one.
2) Can I switch a contactor or motor starter coil directly off this B-Line photoelectric sensor?
Within limits. The 1355R-6503 has an SPDT Form C relay output rated 3A at 120 Vac or 30 Vdc, so it will pull a small contactor or starter coil inside that rating directly. Anything drawing more than 3 amps, or a motor load, needs an interposing relay. The Form C contact gives you both normally open and normally closed at the same time, so you can wire light-operate or dark-operate logic without reconfiguring the sensor.
3) Is this sensor hard-wired or does it use a quick-disconnect?
It terminates in a 5 pin mini connector, so it is a plug-in replacement rather than a conduit-and-terminal job. You supply the mating 5 pin mini cordset in the length you need; the cable is not part of the sensor. Being a quick-disconnect, swapping a failed unit on a line is a matter of unscrewing the connector rather than pulling wire.
4) Will this photoelectric sensor survive washdown or outdoor use?
It carries NEMA 1, 3, 4, 6, 12 and 13 ratings, which covers dust, rain and hosedown duty as well as oil and coolant in a machine shop, and NEMA 6 covers temporary submersion. Operating temperature runs -40 to 158 F (-40 to 70 C), so it holds up in a freezer aisle or an unheated dock. The housing is Noryl with a nylon lens, so check chemical compatibility if you are spraying aggressive solvents rather than typical washdown detergents.
5) Should I use a diffuse sensor like this or a reflex model with a retroreflector?
Use the diffuse 1355R-6503 when you can only get to one side of the target and the target is reasonably light coloured and close in. Nothing to mount opposite, so it suits tight conveyor guarding and bin-level checks. Go to a reflex model with a retroreflector when you need longer range or the target surface is dark or shiny, since a reflex sensor is triggered by the beam being broken rather than by how well the object reflects. B-Line rates reflex units in the 55 Series against a 3 inch retroreflector, so a reflector has to be mounted opposite for that style.
6) What exactly do I order to get this B-Line 55 Series sensor?
Order it by the manufacturer part number 1355R-6503, a single configuration in the B-Line 55 Series: diffuse reflective, 5 pin mini connector, relay output. There are no finish or range options to pick. The only thing you have to add to complete the install is a mating 5 pin mini cordset and a bracket suited to your mounting surface.
7) How do I tell if the sensor is actually seeing the target when I set it up?
There is a red LED on the unit that shows output status, so during alignment you can walk a target through the beam and watch the LED change state rather than putting a meter on the contacts. That is the quickest way to confirm sensing distance on a diffuse unit, where range depends heavily on how reflective the target is.
