Metallics JPMP80 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What strength and material grade do these screws meet for a spec submittal?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, hardness Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010, which is the US standard for slotted and recessed head machine screws, so head and recess geometry will match any other B18.6.3 6-32 pan head on the job.
2) Can I use these screws on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. The JPMP80 6-32 pan head screws are not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. For a job with domestic sourcing requirements you need a US-made fastener line instead.
3) What size Phillips driver do I need for these 6-32 pan head screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess diameter is 0.159 inch with a gaging depth of 0.055 to 0.080 inch, so a #2 bit seats properly without camming out. A #1 will spin out in the recess.
4) How wide is the pan head, and will it cover a slightly oversized hole?
Head width runs 0.256 to 0.270 inch with a head height of 0.087 to 0.097 inch. That gives you roughly a quarter inch of bearing surface, so it will bridge a hole only a little larger than the 6-32 shank. For a sloppy or elongated hole you want a washer under the head or a larger head style.
5) How are these Metallics machine screws packaged, and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar, 100 pieces, and 100 is the order minimum. Packed weight for the jar is 0.3 lbs. Other sizes and quantities can be had by request.
6) Are zinc plated steel machine screws okay outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plating on carbon steel is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior service. The JPMP80 is steel with a zinc finish, so for wet, exterior, or washdown locations choose a stainless machine screw in the same 6-32 x 1/2 size instead.
7) Is 1/2 inch long enough, or do I need a longer 6-32 screw?
Half an inch of screw covers typical device mounting and thin sheet metal or tapped strap work. If you are shimming a device forward in a recessed box, stacking plaster rings, or going through thicker stock, step up to a longer 6-32 machine screw; Metallics offers other lengths in the PMP series by request.
