Metallics JPMP81 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do these screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JPMP81 6-32 pan head screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic-sourcing clause, these will not qualify.
2) Is a machine screw the right fastener here, or do I need a self-tapping or sheet metal screw?
Machine screws like these need a mating tapped hole or a nut. Device boxes, mud rings, enclosure panels and strut fittings are already tapped 6-32, so a machine screw is correct there. If you are driving into untapped sheet metal, a hole in drywall, or wood, a machine screw will not hold and you want a self-drilling or sheet metal screw instead. Metallics lists these for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work.
3) What size Phillips driver do I need for these 6-32 pan head screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is sized for it, with a Phillips recess diameter of 0.159 in. and a recess penetration gaging depth of 0.055 to 0.080 in. Running a #1 will cam out and chew the recess.
4) How wide is the pan head on a 6-32 machine screw, and will it cover an oversized hole?
The pan head measures 0.256 to 0.27 in. across with a head height of 0.087 to 0.097 in. That is roughly a quarter inch of bearing surface, so it seats cleanly on a standard 6-32 clearance hole but will not bridge a slotted or enlarged hole. For that, add a washer or move to a truss or round-washer head.
5) What steel and strength are these Metallics zinc machine screws?
Low-carbon steel to AISI 1006-1022 with a zinc plated finish, hardness Rockwell B70-B100, and a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi. Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010, so they interchange with any other B18.6.3 6-32 pan head.
6) Are these screws OK for outdoor or damp-location electrical work?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a dry/indoor-location fastener. It holds up fine inside panels, boxes, and mechanical rooms, but in wet, coastal or washdown areas the plating gives up and the screw rusts. Spec a stainless 6-32 pan head Phillips instead for exterior or damp locations.
7) How do these Metallics machine screws ship, and what is the minimum order?
They come in a jar, with an order minimum of 100 pieces, one jar. Packed weight is 0.34 lbs. The jar is the stocked unit, so an MRO crib or service van stocks them by the jar rather than by the piece.
