Metallics CT8UVSS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics CT8UVSS cable tie rated for outdoor use?
It's built for it. The CT8UVSS is a weather resistant tie made from black UV stabilized nylon, so the carbon black loading is what protects the strap from sunlight degradation in exposed runs, rooftop conduit, and outdoor panel work. Natural (white) nylon ties are the indoor product and will chalk and snap outdoors.
2) What does the SS in Metallics CT8UVSS mean?
It's the stainless steel pawl, the locking tongue inside the head. Standard ties use a molded nylon pawl, which can relax or release when the nylon softens from heat or takes on moisture. A stainless pawl bites the strap mechanically and holds, which is why this version gets specified for outdoor, hot, and wash-down locations while the strap itself is still UV black nylon.
3) Will a Metallics CT8UVSS tie work for bundling wire in a hot attic or mechanical room?
That's a good fit for the stainless pawl version. Heat is what makes an all-nylon head creep and let go over time; the steel tongue in this tie keeps the grip on the strap. The strap is black UV nylon, so it also handles the daylight exposure you get near louvers, skylights, and rooftop penetrations.
4) Can I use a black UV cable tie with a stainless pawl for direct burial or concrete pour applications?
The CT8UVSS is a UV stabilized nylon tie with a stainless locking pawl, which addresses sunlight and the reliability of the latch. Nylon is still nylon, so for buried, embedded, or chemically aggressive locations the usual choice is a fully stainless steel band tie rather than a nylon strap. Use this one for exposed above-grade work.
5) What is the Metallics part number for the 8 inch black UV cable tie with a stainless steel pawl?
Order it as Metallics CT8UVSS. That's the single catalog number for the 8 inch weather resistant black UV nylon tie with the stainless steel pawl, so there is no separate suffix to specify for the pawl or the color.
