American Standard 731100-400.222 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the American Standard Cadet pedestal leg 731100-400 and does it come with the sink basin?
The 731100-400 is the vitreous china pedestal leg only, the column that carries the lavatory basin and hides the supplies and trap. It is not the basin. Order the matching Cadet lavatory top separately if you are building a complete pedestal sink; the leg on its own replaces a cracked or mismatched column under an existing bowl.
2) How tall is the American Standard Cadet pedestal leg and what footprint does it need?
Nominal dimensions are 21-3/4 x 18-1/2 inches (552 x 470 mm) with a 34 inch (864 mm) height. That height is what sets the finished rim of the lavatory, so measure your existing column before swapping: a pedestal is a fixed-height fixture and it will not adjust to a rough-in that was set for a different bowl height.
3) What colors does the Cadet pedestal leg come in, and will it match my existing American Standard fixtures?
Three vitreous china colors: White (731100-400.020), Bone (731100-400.021) and Linen (731100-400.222). If you are matching an existing bowl or toilet, order by that suffix rather than by the color word, since bone and linen read very close in a photograph and only the suffix identifies the glaze. The Cadet is design coordinated to the Colony toilet, so those two lines are meant to sit in the same room.
4) Does the Cadet pedestal leg come with the hardware to anchor it, or do I need to buy an install kit?
A mounting kit ships with the leg. What it does not include is the wall carrier or blocking behind the drywall. A pedestal column carries load but the basin still needs to be anchored to the wall, so on a bare stud wall plan on backing before the board goes up. On a retrofit into finished drywall, you need to hit blocking or add a toggle-rated anchor.
5) Will a pedestal leg hide my P-trap and supply lines, or do I need chrome-finished stops?
The column conceals the trap and supplies from the front and sides, which is the main reason to spec a pedestal over a wall-hung lavatory in a public or half bath. It is not a full enclosure at the back, so on an open-back install use chrome or brushed stops and a finished trap. In a commercial washroom where ADA knee clearance is required, a pedestal is the wrong choice: the column sits in the knee space. Use a wall-hung lavatory with a trap cover there.
6) The Cadet pedestal description mentions a front overflow and a soap ledge. Are those on the leg?
Those belong to the Cadet lavatory basin the column is built for, not to the column itself. The front overflow is the drain relief at the bowl face, and the soap/accessory ledge is the flat deck area on the top. If you are ordering the 731100-400 you are getting the pedestal column; the overflow and ledge come with the matching Cadet top.
7) Is vitreous china durable enough for a rental or multi-family bathroom?
Vitreous china is the standard body for commercial and residential lavatories, a fired ceramic with a glazed non-porous surface that cleans with ordinary bathroom chemicals and will not stain or absorb odor. The trade-off is impact: china chips and cracks if something heavy hits it, which is exactly why the leg is sold as its own part. In a fleet of units, stocking one or two White columns lets you fix a chipped pedestal without replacing the basin.
