TOTO TS2A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need to buy trim separately for the TOTO TS2 shower valve?
Yes, the valve body ships as a valve assembly only. For the two-way diverter you need to add a TOTO two-way diverter trim: TS221DW, TS211DW, TS220DW1, TS210DW or TS220DW. The trims come in TOTO's Silas, Vivian, Wyeth, Connelly and Keane styles, so pick the one matching the rest of the shower fittings. Order the rough valve and the trim on the same job or the wall goes closed with nothing to operate it.
2) Can the TOTO two-way diverter valve shut the water off, or do I still need a volume control?
The two-way diverter has no positive shut-off position. It splits and proportions flow between two outlets, nothing more, so the shower still needs a separate control to turn water on and off. TOTO offers the diverter with an off position as a distinct configuration, and there are one-way and two-way volume control bodies (TS2A, TS2D) if what you actually want is flow control. Specify carefully, this is the most common mis-order on the family.
3) What pipe connection do TOTO TS2 shower valves take?
Standard 1/2 inch NPT. That is threaded iron pipe size, so on copper you sweat or press a female adapter to the valve inlets and on PEX you use a 1/2 inch NPT transition fitting. No proprietary TOTO inlet to source.
4) Which TOTO valve body do I use for a shower with two body sprays plus a showerhead?
Count the outlets you need to feed at once. Two outlets, showerhead and handshower or a single spray bank, take the two-way diverter (TSMVW, or TSMV with an off position). Three outlets take the three-way diverter, TSMXW, or TSMX with off. Feeding more outlets than the valve is built for starves them all, so size the diverter to the outlet count before the walls are closed.
5) Will a TOTO diverter valve hold up in a hotel or apartment shower?
The body is solid brass and corrosion resistant, and the working element is a ceramic disc cartridge rather than a rubber washer. Ceramic disc is what you want on high-cycle openings, it is the same wear part standard across commercial shower valves, and the cartridge is the serviceable piece rather than the whole rough-in. Across a property, standardizing on one TOTO valve model keeps a single cartridge on the maintenance shelf.
6) What are the rough-in dimensions of the TOTO TSMV and TSMX shower valves?
TSMV measures 3.3125 x 3.1875 x 3.1875 inches. TSMVW, TSMX and TSMXW all measure 3.1875 x 3.1875 inches with a 1.8 figure on the third axis. TS2D is 3.3125 x 3.75 x 3.75 inches, and TSMA is the compact one at 2.803 x 1.556 x 3. Use those against the stud bay depth and the spacing between the mixing valve and the diverter so the escutcheons do not collide on the finished wall.
7) What is the difference between the TOTO TS2A and TS2D volume control valves?
TS2A is a one-way volume control, a single body regulating flow to one outlet. TS2D is a two-way volume control, handling two. Both are separate parts from the diverters: a volume control meters how much water goes to an outlet, while a diverter decides which outlet gets it. A shower with a head and a handshower that you want to run at independent flow rates needs both a diverter and volume control, not one part doing double duty.
8) Which TOTO valve pairs with Silas or Vivian shower trim?
Silas, Vivian, Wyeth, Connelly and Keane two-way diverter trims all mount on TOTO's two-way diverter valve body. The trim style sets the look, the valve underneath is common to all five, which is useful when a property runs different trim styles across units but wants one rough-in on the truck.
9) Is the TOTO valve body finish visible once the shower is tiled?
No. The valve is a rough-in body buried in the wall, and the finish you see in the shower comes entirely from the separately ordered trim. So match the trim to the room's other fittings and let the valve body be selected on function, outlet count, volume control or diverter, with or without an off position.
