The AX-084C is a Central Exchange Unit for the AX Integrated Audio & Video Security system. Audio/ Video and/or Audio-only Master or Door Stations connect directly to this unit via homerun CAT-5e wiring and RJ45 jacks.

The AX-084C supports up to 4 Master Stations and up to 8 Door/Sub stations. The AX-084C can be expanded in increments of 32 for up to 104 Door/ Sub stations with the use of AX-320C add-on CEU's.

The CEU handles the calling and communication signals for the system, as well as providing selective door release outputs, video outputs, DVR trigger outputs, and CO line transfer output. System set-up and a variety of functions are programmed in the CEU with the use of the supplied software. Power is applied directly to the CEU via two PS-2420UL power supplies. The serial connection is for uploading the system programming, for raw RS232 data output, or for system monitoring via the supplied program.

1) How many door stations and master stations does the Aiphone AX-084C central exchange unit support?
The AX-084C handles up to 8 door or sub stations and up to 4 master stations on the AX audio and video intercom system. If the building outgrows that, the unit expands in increments of 32 using AX-320C add-on exchange units, to a ceiling of 104 door/sub stations.
2) What wire do I need to run between the AX door stations and the central exchange unit, and how far can it go?
Cat-5e, home run from each station back to the exchange unit into RJ45 jacks. No daisy chaining, each station gets its own run. Distance limit is 980 feet from a door or sub station to the exchange unit, and 980 feet from the exchange unit to a master. If you are adding an AX-320C add-on unit, that link is only 16 feet, so the two chassis need to live in the same rack.
3) How is the AX-084C powered? Does it come with a power supply?
Power lands directly on the exchange unit from two PS-2420UL 24V DC power supplies, wired into two 24V DC input terminals. Those supplies are separate items, so budget both of them with the unit. The supply run uses 2-conductor overall shielded cable (Aiphone 821802) and is limited to 16 feet at 22AWG or 33 feet at 18AWG, so the power supplies mount close to the CEU. Current draw is 0.62A max on video and 0.65A max on audio.
4) Can the AX-084C release a door strike directly, or do I need a separate relay?
Door release is a programmable dry contact rated 24V AC/DC at 500mA, and it is selective, meaning you choose which door opens from which station. That rating drives a low-draw strike such as the EL-12S. Anything drawing more than 500mA (most magnetic locks and heavier strikes) needs an RY-24L relay between the exchange unit and the lock so the contact is not switching the lock current itself.
5) Can the AX-084C be rack mounted in a comms closet?
Yes, it mounts in a standard 19 inch EIA rack and takes 2U of space. Wall mounting is the other option if there is no rack in the closet.
6) Can I tie the AX intercom into a DVR or existing camera monitors?
The exchange unit carries two BNC composite video outputs plus video switching triggers, so door station video can feed monitors or a recorder, and DVR trigger outputs let a call event start recording. Audio-only and audio/video stations both connect to the same unit, so a mixed system is fine.
7) Can a call at the door be forwarded to a phone when nobody is at the desk?
The AX system supports CO line transfer through this exchange unit, over an RJ11 port. It needs a Viking K-1900-5 programmable auto-dialer to do it, which is a separate purchase, not part of the unit.
8) How is the AX system programmed, and do I need a laptop on site?
All system setup and function programming is done in the exchange unit with the software supplied with it, connected over the serial port. That same serial connection also puts out raw RS232 data and supports system monitoring through the supplied program, which is how an integrator troubleshoots a live system without pulling stations.
9) Is the Aiphone AX-084C a commercial grade intercom controller or a residential one?
Commercial. It is the wiring hub and brain of an AX Series integrated audio and video security system, controlling call routing and all system functionality for offices, schools, healthcare and multi-tenant properties. On its own it is not an intercom, it is the exchange unit that the door stations and masters plug into, so a working system also needs those stations and two power supplies.
