The AX-248C is a Central Exchange Unit for the AX Integrated Audio & Video Security system. Audio/ Video and/or Audio-only Master or Door Stations connect directly to this unit via homerun CAT-5e wiring and RJ45 jacks.

The AX-248C supports up to 8 Master Stations and up to 24 Door/Sub stations. The AX series can be expanded in increments of 32 for up to 120 Door/ Sub stations with the use of AX-320C add-on CEU's.

2) What wire do I run for an Aiphone AX system, and how far can I go from the exchange unit to a door station?
Station wiring is homerun Cat-5e with RJ45 jacks, one run per station back to the AX-248C. Run length is 980 feet from the exchange unit to a Door/Sub station, and 980 feet from the exchange unit to a Master. Power wiring is different: 2-conductor with an overall shield (Aiphone 821802), and it is short, 16 feet at 22AWG or 33 feet at 18AWG. Plan the power supply next to the CEU, not down the hall.
3) Can the AX-248C release a door strike directly, or do I need a relay?
There is a programmable dry contact on board rated 24V AC/DC at 500mA. That is enough for a small strike or an interface input, but a maglock or a heavy-draw strike will exceed it. For anything above that rating, run the contact into an Aiphone RY-24L relay and switch the lock power through the relay instead. Note the contact is dry, so lock power comes from your own supply either way.
4) Is the AX-248C the intercom itself, or do I still need to order stations?
It is the wiring hub and controller only, not a station. The AX-248C is the central exchange unit that all AX audio, video, or audio-only Master and Door Stations home run into over Cat-5e, and it controls all functionality of the AX Series. You order the Master Stations, the Door/Sub Stations, and the 24V DC power supplies separately. System behavior is set up in the supplied programming software rather than with dip switches at each station.
5) How do you mount an Aiphone AX-248C exchange unit, in a rack or on the wall?
Either. The AX-248C mounts in a 19 inch EIA rack taking 2U of space, or it wall mounts in a closet or IDF. In a rack, budget the 2U plus room beside it for the power supplies, since those have to be within 16 to 33 feet depending on wire gauge.
6) What power does the Aiphone AX-248C central exchange unit need?
The unit takes 24V DC and has two power supply input terminals. Current draw depends on how the system is used: 0.62A max on video, 0.65A max on audio. Feed it with 2-conductor shielded cable (Aiphone 821802), and keep that run under 16 feet with 22AWG or 33 feet with 18AWG.
