Distance from the master to the farthest sub-master handset is 245 feet on 22AWG or 580 feet on 18AWG, so if your run is past 245 feet, step up to 18AWG. The door station leg is different: 2 conductor shielded, Aiphone #822202, good for 500 feet at 22AWG or 1,180 feet at 18AWG.
3) Can I release a door strike from an Aiphone IE-8 handset?
Door release is a normally open dry contact rated 24V AC or DC at 350mA. Dry contact means the handset provides no power of its own, so you feed the strike or maglock from its own supply and the contact just closes the circuit. Anything drawing more than 350mA needs to go through a relay rather than straight off the contact.
4) Do I need an IE-8MD master station to use an IE-8HD, or can it work on its own?
An IE-8MD master station is required. The IE-8HD is a sub-master handset, and the wiring topology runs door station to master station, then master station out to the sub stations. The handsets do not stand in for the master.
5) Is the Aiphone IE-8HD suitable for a commercial building, and does it need power at each handset?
It is a commercial-rated intercom handset. Wiring is 4 conductor shielded from the master station, so there is no separate power run to each handset location, which is what makes adding stations to an existing IE-8 system practical in an occupied building.

Audio only. It is a handset station in Aiphone's audio intercom line, with full-duplex voice between handsets. If a tenant needs to see who is at the entry before releasing the door, an audio handset is the wrong choice and you want a video door station package instead.
