1) Does the Aiphone JOS-1FW box set include everything needed, or do I have to buy the door station and power supply separately?
The JOS-1FW ships as a complete system: the JO-DVF flush mount video door station, the JO-1MDW 7 inch touchscreen master monitor, and the PS-1820UL power supply. Nothing else is required to get a working entry station and monitor. Two things it does not include are the low capacitance 2 conductor station wire and a MicroSD card if you want storage beyond the onboard memory. One caution for anyone planning a second entrance: the JO-DVF in this set is not sold separately, so a second door station is ordered as a JO-DV.
2) Can the Aiphone JO Series door station be surface mounted, or does it have to go in the wall?
The JO-DVF door station is a flush mount unit and it mounts using the back box supplied in the set, so the wall needs to be opened up for it. If the entry is a solid surface, masonry face, or a jamb where you cannot cut in a box, this is the wrong station for the opening. The inside JO-1MDW monitor is the opposite: it surface wall mounts, or sits on a desk with the MCW-S stand.
3) How far can the Aiphone JO-DVF door station be run from the inside monitor?
Wire distance from the JO-DVF to the master is 165 feet on 22AWG and 330 feet on 18AWG, using 2 conductor low capacitance solid non-shielded cable. Going up a gauge is how you buy distance here, so a run from a lobby door back to a rear office is a jump to 18AWG rather than a different product. The door station takes its power from the inside monitor, so there is no separate power run to the entrance.
4) Will the Aiphone JO-DVF door station hold up outdoors in winter and rain?
The JO-DVF carries an IP54 enclosure rating and an IK07 impact rating, with a stainless steel faceplate, and its operating range runs from -40 to 140 degrees F (-40 to 60 C). IP54 is dust protected and rated against splashing water, so it belongs under some cover rather than in a spot taking direct driven rain. The temperature range covers essentially any North American climate. Built in white LEDs come on automatically so the camera still shows a caller after dark.
5) Can the Aiphone JO Series intercom release an electric strike or maglock?
Door release from the JO-1MDW monitor is a normally open dry contact rated 24V AC/DC at 500mA. That switches a strike or a mag lock power supply within those limits, but it is a dry contact only, not a power source, so the lock gets its own supply and the intercom just closes the circuit. Anything drawing more than 500mA needs a relay between the monitor and the lock. The same contact is what the mobile app slider fires, so a released door works from the touchscreen or off site.
6) How many phones can answer the door on an Aiphone JOS-1FW system?
Up to 8 smartphones or tablets per system, using the Intercom App Type B from the Apple App Store or Google Play. That is the ceiling for a JO Series set, which suits a small office, a single tenant, or a property manager who wants two or three staff on call, but is not a whole staff roster for a large building. The JO-1MDW connects over 2.4 GHz wireless on 802.11b/g/n, and because the monitor is hardwired to the door station, calls still ring and record on site when the internet is down.
7) Does the Aiphone JO-1MDW record video calls, and is there a monthly fee?
Recording is onboard, with no subscription attached to it. Out of the box the JO-1MDW holds 10 calls at 10 seconds each. Drop a micro SDHC card in the slot, up to 32GB, and that goes to 1,000 calls at 10 seconds each. Recording can be triggered by hand or set to capture every call automatically, and clips play back on the monitor or in the app. Note the 10 second per call limit, this is a record of who was at the door, not continuous surveillance footage.
8) Is the Aiphone JOS-1FW rated for commercial use or just homes?
Aiphone classifies the JOS-1FW as commercial, and the door station hardware backs that up: stainless faceplate, IK07 impact rating, IP54 enclosure. It reads well for a small commercial front entrance, a leasing office, or a clinic reception door. Where it runs out is scale, an 8 device app limit and a single master monitor is a one entrance, one answering point system, not a multi tenant directory panel for an apartment building lobby.
9) What power does an Aiphone JOS-1FW intercom system need at the panel?
The included PS-1820UL runs on AC 100 to 240V, 50/60Hz, and puts out DC 18V at 2A. 10) Can an Aiphone JO Series video intercom replace a standard doorbell?
Yes, that is one of the intended swaps, the JO-DVF takes the place of an ordinary doorbell button and adds video and two way audio to it. The catch is that it is not a doorbell wiring retrofit. The JO-DVF is flush mounted in its supplied back box and needs a 2 conductor low capacitance solid non-shielded run back to the monitor, so plan on cutting in a box at the entry and pulling new station wire rather than reusing the existing bell wire and chime.
11) Is the Aiphone JO-1MDW handsfree or do you have to hold a button to talk?
Either one at the monitor. The JO-1MDW supports handsfree or push to talk, which is the setting to reach for at a noisy entrance where handsfree keeps clipping. The JO-DVF door station itself is handsfree only, so the visitor never has to hold anything down.
12) What camera is in the Aiphone JO-DVF door station and how well does it see at night?
A 1/4 inch color CMOS camera feeds the 7 inch TFT touchscreen on the monitor.
