Aiphone JOS-1V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What comes in the Aiphone JOS-1V box set, and do I need to order anything else to get it working?
The JOS-1V ships as a complete one-door system: the JO-DV vandal resistant surface mount door station, the JO-1MD 7 inch inside station, and the PS-1820UL power supply. What is not in the box is the wire. Aiphone specifies 2-conductor, low capacitance, non-shielded cable (Aiphone #871802), and if you are releasing a door you will also need the strike or maglock itself. That is the whole shopping list for a basic entry: set, wire, strike.
2) How far can I run the wire from the Aiphone JO-DV door station to the inside monitor?
Run length depends on the gauge. From the door station to the farthest master station, the JO Series allows 165 feet on 22AWG and 330 feet on 18AWG. If the front entry is more than 165 feet of pulled cable from the apartment or office where the monitor goes, pull 18AWG and you are good to 330 feet. Past 330 feet this system is not the right choice.
3) Can I add a second monitor or a second entrance to the Aiphone JOS-1V system?
A second inside station, yes. A second door, no. The JO Series handles one door and up to two inside stations, so you can add a monitor at a back office or a second floor, but the system is built around a single entrance. If you need to cover two entries, the JO Series is the wrong platform for the job.
4) Will the Aiphone JOS-1V release my electric strike, and what are the contact ratings?
Door release on the JO Series is a normally open dry contact rated 24V AC/DC at 500mA. That drives most small electric strikes directly. Anything drawing more than 500mA, a maglock or a heavier strike, needs the Aiphone RY-18L relay between the intercom and the lock. Check the current draw on the strike you are installing before you wire it straight to the station.
5) How much will I actually see on the Aiphone JO-DV camera when someone is standing at the door?
The JO-DV uses a 1/4 inch CMOS camera with a view area of 2 feet 1 inch vertical by 3 feet 1 inch horizontal measured at 20 inches. At normal standing distance that frames a visitor's head and shoulders on the 7 inch LCD, which is enough to identify a face or read a delivery badge. It is not a wide area surveillance camera and it will not show you the whole vestibule.
6) Is the Aiphone JOS-1V a flush mount or surface mount set, and is the door station rated for an exposed entrance?
Surface mount. The JO-DV door station in the JOS-1V mounts to the wall face rather than into a back box cut into it, which is what you want on masonry or an existing finished wall where you cannot open up the substrate. It is the vandal resistant version of the door station, so it is the one to specify for an unattended street level entry, a parking gate, or a multi-family front door rather than a protected lobby.
7) Does the Aiphone JOS-1V let you talk hands free, or do you have to hold a button?
Both modes are supported. The JO Series inside station does hands-free VOX communication or push-to-talk simplex, and you pick per call. Hands-free is the default for most users; push-to-talk is the fallback in a noisy lobby or a busy office where ambient sound keeps tripping the VOX and cutting the visitor off mid sentence. The station uses electrostatic touch buttons rather than mechanical keys.
8) Is the Aiphone JOS-1V intended for commercial buildings or is it a residential doorbell?
The JOS-1V is classed as commercial equipment. It is a wired, dedicated-cable intercom with its own PS-1820UL power supply, not a cloud doorbell riding on the tenant's wifi, so it keeps working when the internet drops and it is not tied to anyone's phone account. For a property manager standardizing entries across a building, that matters more than the feature list.
