1) Will the Aiphone NI-JA door station fit a standard 2-gang electrical box?
Yes. The NI-JA is built to flush mount in a 2-gang box, which is what most rough-ins at an entry already have. If the wall is finished or you're mounting on a surface where you can't set a box, use the Aiphone SBX-2G/A surface mount box instead.
2) What wire do I need to run to an Aiphone NI-JA door station, and how far can it go?
Three conductor overall shielded cable, and Aiphone specifies its own #821803 for the run. At 18AWG you get 650 feet between the door station and the master. That distance is the deciding number on a long institutional corridor or a detached entry, so measure the actual pull, not the straight line.
3) Does the Aiphone NI-JA work on its own, or does it need a master station?
It needs a master. The NI-JA is a call-in door station only, and it does its 2-way talk with an NIM master station. Ordering it by itself gets you a stainless panel with nothing to answer it.
4) Does a visitor have to hold a button to talk on the Aiphone NI-JA?
No. Communication is hands-free at the door, so the person outside presses to call and then just talks. That matters at an entry used by delivery drivers, residents with their hands full, or anyone in a wheelchair who can't hold a panel button.

Yes. The panel is stainless steel and the station is weather and vandal resistant, which is why it goes on the exterior side of an entry rather than in a lobby. For a multi-family or school entrance taking daily abuse, that stainless face is the part doing the work.

It's a complete door station: a stainless faceplate with call-in and hands-free two-way audio built in. Audio only, no camera. Someone at the door presses to call, staff answers at the NIM master, and both sides talk without holding anything down.
