The LE-SS-1G is a 1-gang stainless steel vandal proof and weather resistant sub station designed for use with the LEM, LEF, LAF/LDF-C, AP-M, and MP-S systems. 1) Will the Aiphone LE-SS-1G door station work with my LEF master station?
Yes. The LE-SS-1G sub station is built for the LEM, LEF, LAF/LDF-C, AP-M, and MP-S systems, so it drops onto an existing LEF audio intercom without a separate interface. It provides call-in and open voice hands-free talk once the master answers.
2) Can the Aiphone LE-SS-1G be surface mounted, or does it need a box in the wall?
Either way. It mounts flush into a standard 1-gang box or ring, and for a wall where you cannot cut in a box, it mounts on the surface with the Aiphone SBX-SS-1G back box. Overall size is 4-1/2 inches by 2-3/4 inches by 2 inches, so plan the surface box location around that footprint.
3) How far can I run wire from an Aiphone LE-SS-1G door station back to the master?
Run distance depends on gauge: 650 feet on 22 AWG and 1,600 feet on 18 AWG, measured from the door station to the farthest master station. Wire must be 3 conductor with an overall shield, such as Aiphone 822203 (22 AWG) or 821803 (18 AWG). On a long parking-lot or gate run, pull the 18 AWG rather than trying to stretch 22.
4) Is the Aiphone LE-SS-1G rated for an exterior door in a cold climate?
It runs from -40 to 85 degrees C (-40 F), so unheated exterior entries, loading docks and gate posts are within its range. The panel is 12 gauge stainless steel and the speaker is moisture and puncture resistant, which is what makes it weather and vandal resistant rather than just an indoor station in a metal face.
5) Do I need to order tamper proof screws separately for the Aiphone LE-SS-1G?
No. Each LE-SS-1G ships with its tamper proof screws and the driver tool to install them. What you do have to add is the wire (3 conductor shielded, Aiphone 822203 or 821803), the 1-gang box or ring for flush work, or the SBX-SS-1G if you are surface mounting.

Audio only. It is a call-in and talk sub station for Aiphone's LEF-family audio intercoms, with open voice hands-free conversation once the master picks up. If a tenant needs to see who is at the door, this is the wrong part and you want a video door station instead.
