Aiphone LE-SS/A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Aiphone intercom systems does the LE-SS/A door station work with?
The LE-SS/A and LE-SSR are door stations for Aiphone's LEM and LEF systems, and for IX series systems when paired with an IX-1AS adaptor. They are audio-only sub stations, so they will not work as a video entry point. Communication at the door is hands free once the master station answers.
2) What is the difference between the Aiphone LE-SS/A and the LE-SSR?
Button type is the only difference called out. The LE-SS/A has a flat stainless steel mechanical call button that sits with the panel. The LE-SSR has a red mushroom style button, which stands proud of the face and is easier to find and press, so it is the one to pick for a visitor entrance where people are hunting for the call point, or where a gloved hand has to work it. Both are the same 12 gauge stainless panel and the same 2-gang footprint.
3) Can an Aiphone LE-SS/A door station be installed outdoors in an unheated or exposed location?
It is built for exactly that. The panel is 12 gauge stainless steel, weather and vandal resistant, with a moisture and puncture resistant speaker, and it is rated to operate from 14 to 140 degrees F (-10 to 60 degrees C). That covers most exterior entries in the continental US, but a station in a location that regularly drops below 14F, such as an unheated loading dock in a northern winter, is running outside its stated range.
4) How far can I run wire from the Aiphone LE-SS/A door station back to the master station?
Run length depends on gauge. With Aiphone #822203 22AWG cable the door station can sit up to 650 feet from the farthest master station; with #821803 18AWG that goes to 1,600 feet. Either way it is 3 conductor with an overall shield. On a long run down a parking structure or across a campus courtyard, spec the 18AWG up front rather than pulling twice.
5) Do I need to buy tamper proof screws or a special bit for the Aiphone LE-SS/A?
No, both come in the box. Each LE-SS/A and LE-SSR ships with tamper proof screws and the tool to drive them. What you may still need to order separately is the SBX-2G/A back box if you are surface mounting, and the Aiphone shielded cable for the run.
6) Is the Aiphone LE-SS/A door station suitable for a commercial building entrance?
Yes, it is a commercial grade station. The 12 gauge stainless panel with tamper proof fasteners is intended for public facing openings where the unit takes abuse, which is the usual case at an apartment lobby, a school service door, or a gated contractor entrance. Buyers standardizing across a portfolio can specify the LE-SS/A flat button at staff doors and the LE-SSR mushroom button at public entries and keep the same 2-gang prep at every opening.
7) Does the Aiphone LE-SS/A door station have a handset, or does the visitor talk hands free?
Hands free at the door. There is no handset on the LE-SS/A or LE-SSR; it is open voice communication, so the visitor presses the call button and speaks toward the panel once the master station picks up. That is what you want at an exterior door where a dangling handset would be a vandalism target, but it does mean the conversation is audible to anyone standing at the entry.
